SENIOR UNDERWRITER

OVERVIEW

Specialty Program Group is a dynamic Insurance Managing General Agency dedicated to delivering innovative underwriting solutions tailored for our network of brokers across Canada. Our foundation is built on principles of leadership, integrity, innovation, and exceptional service. We are currently seeking a Senior Underwriter to enhance our presence in the Canadian market.

We are particularly interested in underwriters specializing in the following segments:

  • Contractors
ROLE DESCRIPTION

As a Senior Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in driving the growth and profitability of Specialty Program Group. You will utilize your established broker relationships, industry expertise, and creative problem-solving skills to cultivate your portfolio within your area of specialization. Supported by a team of seasoned professionals, we offer a comprehensive range of products, significant capacity, and the autonomy necessary for your success. Your primary focus will be on attracting and underwriting new business opportunities while mentoring junior team members. Collaboration with colleagues and management will be essential to provide added value and exceptional service to our broker partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct risk assessments utilizing both internal and external data resources to quote, negotiate, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to high complexity risks, emphasizing new business production;
  • Engage in underwriting meetings, presentations, and broker discussions;
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including participation in industry seminars and networking events;
  • Negotiate coverage terms and pricing with brokers in accordance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority;
  • Communicate decisions and respond to inquiries in a timely and professional manner;
  • Manage and grow a profitable book of business;
  • Ensure compliance with corporate guidelines and delegated authority;
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions and ensure the completeness of policy data;
  • Prepare loss reports and conduct post-claim underwriting reviews;
  • Mentor junior underwriting staff in both technical and interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the insurance industry, with at least 3 years in a specialized role;
  • A deep understanding of commercial underwriting principles and the ability to apply this knowledge effectively;
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with strong sales and negotiation capabilities, demonstrating a track record of revenue growth;
  • A commitment to delivering outstanding customer experiences and value in every interaction;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong decision-making and analytical abilities;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a thorough approach to task completion;
  • A Chartered Insurance Professional designation (CIP) or equivalent;
  • A broker license (level 2) or the ability to qualify for licensure.
