Key Responsibilities

The Lead Commercial Underwriter will play a pivotal role in fostering relationships, driving revenue, and securing profitable business within the region and beyond. Leveraging specialized knowledge and expertise in insurance products and the industry, the Lead Commercial Underwriter will facilitate strategic client growth, recommend and implement effective action plans, and cultivate strong partnerships with brokers. A proven track record in strategic thinking, initiative, and sales is essential. This position supports our Commercial Property & Casualty team. We currently operate in a hybrid model, with expectations for all employees to work from the office as needed.

Core Responsibilities

Sales: Strategic Business Development and Product Innovation
  • Identify new growth avenues with key brokers, ensuring they align with the organization's risk appetite
  • Expand broker networks by engaging in outreach to discover new clients and compile lists of potential focus brokers
  • Conduct marketing visits to strengthen broker relationships and promote our offerings
  • Sustain existing broker relationships to encourage renewals and generate new business opportunities
  • Formulate marketing strategies to effectively compete with industry peers
  • Leverage other H. W. Kaufman offices through referrals to enhance business placement
  • Ensure prompt and courteous service is extended to all agents and brokers
  • Collaborate with fellow Underwriters to take ownership of a regional business portfolio
Underwriting: Risk Analysis and Business Placement
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of underwriting guidelines and brokerage markets
  • Gather sufficient underwriting information for quoting, binding, and issuing policies
  • Assess coverage requirements, pricing, and conditions
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions effectively
  • Submit high-quality submissions to markets
  • Provide guidance to brokers regarding discrepancies between quotes and coverage options
  • Review inspections promptly to verify risk quality
  • Ensure thorough documentation of all files to mitigate potential errors and omissions
  • Maintain strong relationships with carriers
  • Stay updated on underwriting practices and maintain necessary licenses and certifications
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • CIP designation or equivalent industry experience
  • Provincial License or eligibility to obtain one
  • High level of industry engagement
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Commercial Insurance
  • Strong underwriting skills are highly preferred
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic marketing initiatives
  • In-depth knowledge of domestic and international Commercial markets
