Key Responsibilities

The Lead Commercial Underwriter will play a pivotal role in cultivating partnerships, driving revenue, and securing profitable business within the region and beyond. Leveraging specialized knowledge and expertise in commercial insurance products and the broader industry landscape, this position will facilitate strategic client expansion, recommend and execute profitable initiatives, and foster robust relationships with brokers. A proven track record in strategic thinking, proactive engagement, and sales is essential. This role supports our Commercial Property & Casualty team.

Primary Duties

Sales: Strategic Business Development and Product Innovation

Identify and pursue new growth avenues with key brokers, ensuring alignment with the organization's strategic objectives. Expand broker networks by engaging in outreach to discover new clients and compile lists of prospective brokers. Conduct marketing engagements to strengthen broker relationships and promote offerings. Sustain existing broker partnerships to facilitate renewals and generate new business opportunities. Formulate marketing strategies to enhance competitiveness against other firms. Leverage referrals from other offices to optimize business placements. Ensure exceptional client service is delivered to all agents and brokers. Collaborate with fellow Underwriters to manage a portfolio of regional business.

Underwriting: Risk Assessment and Business Placement

Maintain comprehensive knowledge of underwriting guidelines and brokerage markets. Gather sufficient underwriting information for quoting, binding, and issuance processes. Evaluate coverage requirements, pricing, and conditions. Negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions effectively. Submit high-quality submissions to relevant markets. Provide guidance to brokers regarding discrepancies between quotes and coverage options. Promptly assess inspections to validate risk quality. Ensure meticulous documentation of all files to mitigate potential errors and omissions. Cultivate and maintain relationships with carriers. Stay informed about underwriting practices and maintain necessary licenses and certifications.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or a comparable combination of education and experience. CIP designation or equivalent industry experience. Provincial License or eligibility to obtain one. Active participation in the industry. Over 5 years of experience in Commercial Insurance. Strong underwriting expertise is highly preferred. Demonstrated capability to design and implement strategic marketing initiatives. In-depth knowledge of domestic and international commercial markets.
