Key Responsibilities

The Lead Commercial Underwriter will play a pivotal role in fostering partnerships, driving revenue, and securing profitable accounts within the sector and beyond. Leveraging specialized knowledge and expertise in insurance products and market dynamics, the Lead Commercial Underwriter will facilitate strategic client expansion, propose and execute profitable strategies, and cultivate robust relationships with brokers. A proven track record in strategic planning, proactive engagement, and sales is essential. This position is integral to our Commercial Property & Casualty team.

Core Duties

Sales: Strategic Growth and Product Development

Identify and pursue new business opportunities with key brokers, ensuring alignment with the organization's risk appetite. Expand broker networks by leveraging connections to identify potential clients and compile lists of target brokers. Conduct outreach visits to strengthen broker relationships and promote the organization's offerings. Sustain existing broker partnerships to secure renewals and generate new business. Formulate marketing strategies to effectively compete in the marketplace. Collaborate with other offices to leverage referrals for business placement. Ensure timely and professional service is provided to all agents and brokers. Work collaboratively with fellow Underwriters to take ownership of a portfolio of regional business.

Underwriting: Risk Assessment and Business Placement

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of underwriting guidelines and market conditions. Gather comprehensive underwriting information for quoting, binding, and policy issuance. Evaluate coverage requirements, pricing, and terms. Negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions with stakeholders. Submit high-quality proposals to insurance markets. Provide guidance to brokers regarding discrepancies between quotes and coverage options. Review inspections promptly to assess risk quality. Ensure meticulous documentation of all files to mitigate potential errors and omissions. Foster strong relationships with carriers. Stay informed about underwriting practices and maintain necessary licenses and certifications.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. CIP designation or equivalent industry experience. Provincial License or eligibility for obtaining one. High level of industry engagement. Minimum of 5 years of experience in Commercial Insurance. Strong underwriting acumen is highly preferred. Proven ability to develop and implement strategic marketing initiatives. In-depth knowledge of both domestic and international Commercial markets.
