SENIOR UNDERWRITER

INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW

In the role of Senior Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in driving the growth and profitability of Specialty Program Group. You will utilize existing broker relationships, your expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset to develop your portfolio within your area of specialization. Supported by a team of seasoned practice leaders, managers, and executives, we offer a comprehensive range of products, significant capacity, and the empowerment necessary for your success. Your primary focus will be on attracting and underwriting new business opportunities while mentoring junior staff. Collaboration with colleagues and management will be essential to provide value-added expertise and outstanding service to our broker partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct risk assessments utilizing both internal and external data resources to quote, negotiate, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to high complexity risks, emphasizing new business production;
  • Engage in underwriting meetings, formal and informal presentations, and broker interactions;
  • Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including participation in industry-related seminars and networking events as required;
  • Negotiate coverage and pricing with brokers in accordance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority;
  • Communicate decisions and respond to inquiries in a timely and professional manner;
  • Manage, enhance, and expand a portfolio of profitable business;
  • Ensure compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority;
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions and ensure the completeness of policy data;
  • Prepare loss reports and conduct post-claim underwriting reviews;
  • Mentor underwriting staff in general underwriting principles, technical skills, and interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the insurance industry, with at least 3 years in a specialized area;
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial underwriting principles and the ability to apply this expertise in daily operations;
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with strong sales and negotiation abilities, demonstrating a track record of revenue growth;
  • A commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences and value in every interaction;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong decision-making and analytical capabilities;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a meticulous approach to task completion;
  • A Chartered Insurance Professional designation (CIP) or equivalent qualification;
  • A broker license (level 2) or the ability to qualify for licensure.
