Opportunity for Board of Directors Membership

Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing unwavering support, respect, and love to all youth in need. Our mission is to assist those experiencing homelessness and to safeguard the well-being of all youth.

CHV is inviting applications for positions on our volunteer governance Board of Directors. We are looking for individuals who are deeply committed to our mission of offering compassion and respect to homeless youth. Candidates should reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, including various gender identities, ethnic backgrounds, ages, sexual orientations, disabilities, and socio-economic statuses. Our organization values a board composition that balances skills, experiences, perspectives, and independence in alignment with our strategic objectives.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute the following expertise and/or lived experiences:

  • Leadership in the Health Care System (mental health, addictions/substance use disorders)

Role Overview:

Each Director plays a crucial role in CHV's governance framework, providing strategic vision and direction for the organization. The Board of Directors is collectively responsible for establishing effective governance and risk management strategies that promote CHV's mission, achieve strategic goals, protect assets, and ensure the sustainable growth of our programs and services. Directors must ensure that the organization operates in accordance with established policies, by-laws, and best governance practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide the strategic direction of CHV.
  • Oversee the performance of the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Ensure the development and implementation of a robust strategic plan.
  • Manage financial and risk-related matters.
  • Provide insights and guidance on CHV's strategic initiatives.
  • Enhance CHV's reputation and brand within the community.
  • Ensure financial integrity and sustainability.
  • Utilize knowledge and networks to foster collaborative efforts that advance CHV's mission.
  • Review and refine governance and operational policies.
  • Promote a culture of high performance, ethical conduct, accountability, and transparency.
  • Contribute specialized knowledge to the Board.
  • Uphold the highest standards of integrity and loyalty.
  • Act in the best interest of the organization, adhering to conflict-of-interest policies.
  • Engage in orientation to understand CHV's policies and operations.
  • Collaborate respectfully in a team-oriented environment.
  • Commit time to fulfill responsibilities effectively.
  • Participate actively in Board committees.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding internal matters.
  • Represent the Board and CHV in the community when required.

Commitment:

  • Prepare for and attend Board and Committee meetings, engaging actively in discussions and decisions:
    • Quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors, typically lasting 3 hours, held in person or via videoconference, including an annual retreat.
    • Quarterly committee meetings, typically lasting 2 hours, also held in person or via videoconference.
    • Preparation for meetings is essential and should be considered in the overall time commitment.
  • Be available for communication between meetings.
  • Stay informed about developments in governance and regulatory matters.
  • Understand and support the organization's mission, policies, and programs, including financial statements.
  • Participate in training and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships.
  • Make a meaningful personal financial contribution annually.

Accountability:

Directors are accountable to the Chair of the Board and one another.

Priority Areas:

Previous experience on a governance board is advantageous. We encourage individuals with strategic and analytical skills, a holistic perspective, and relevant expertise or lived experience in the specified priority areas to consider this opportunity.
