Opportunity for Board of Directors Membership

Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) is a charitable organization based in Vancouver, dedicated to providing unwavering support, respect, and love to all youth in need. Our mission focuses on assisting youth facing homelessness and ensuring the safety of those who require help.

CHV is currently inviting applications for its volunteer governance Board of Directors. We are looking for individuals who are deeply committed to our mission of delivering compassion and respect to homeless youth. We value diversity and encourage applications from candidates representing various backgrounds, including gender identity, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, disability, and socio-economic status. Our aim is to ensure that the board's composition reflects a balance of skills, experiences, perspectives, and independence that align with the strategic needs of our organization.

Desired Expertise:

We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute the following expertise and/or lived experiences to our Board of Directors:

  • Leadership within the Health Care System, particularly in mental health and substance use disorders.

Role Overview:

Each Director plays a crucial role in CHV's governance framework, offering strategic guidance and vision for the organization. The Board of Directors is collectively responsible for establishing effective governance and risk management strategies that promote CHV's mission, achieve strategic objectives, protect assets, and ensure the sustainable growth of our programs and services. Directors are tasked with ensuring that the organization operates in accordance with established policies, by-laws, and principles of good governance.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing strategic direction to CHV.
  • Overseeing the performance of the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Ensuring the development and execution of a robust strategic plan.
  • Managing financial and risk oversight.
  • Offering counsel and input on CHV's strategic direction.
  • Enhancing CHV's reputation and brand at both individual and community levels.
  • Ensuring financial integrity and sustainability.
  • Utilizing knowledge, expertise, and networks to foster collective action towards achieving CHV's mission.
  • Reviewing and maintaining governance and operational policies.
  • Promoting a culture of high performance, ethical behavior, accountability, and transparency.
  • Contributing specific expertise to the Board.
  • Upholding the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
  • Acting in the best interest of the organization while adhering to conflict-of-interest policies.
  • Participating in orientation to understand CHV's issues and policies.
  • Collaborating respectfully with others in a team environment.
  • Committing the necessary time to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Engaging as an active member of a Board committee.
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding internal matters.
  • Representing the Board and CHV in the community when required.

Commitment Expectations:

  • Preparation for and attendance at Board and Committee meetings, actively participating in discussions and decisions, including:
    • Quarterly 3-hour Board meetings, either in person or via videoconference, with one annual retreat.
    • Quarterly 2-hour committee meetings, also in person or via videoconference.
    • Preparation for meetings is essential and should be factored into the overall time commitment.
  • Being accessible for communication between meetings.
  • Staying informed about developments in governance and regulatory environments.
  • Understanding and supporting the organization's mission, policies, and programs.
  • Attending relevant trainings and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Engaging in efforts to secure financial resources and partnerships.
  • Making a meaningful personal financial contribution annually.

Accountability:

Directors are accountable to the Chair of the Board and to one another.

Priority Areas:

Previous experience on a governance board is advantageous. We encourage individuals with strategic and analytical skills, a holistic perspective, and relevant expertise or lived experience in the priority areas mentioned above to consider applying.
