Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada Government of Nunavut Full time

Welcome to the Government of Nunavut.

This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.

In alignment with the Government of Nunavut's Remote Hiring Policy, this position is available for remote work.

As part of our commitment to excellence, the Government of Nunavut has been recognized as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers.

The Government of Nunavut is dedicated to enhancing its governance model, which integrates Inuit societal values and promotes the use of the Inuktut language. We strive to create a representative public service and collaborate with partners to fulfill the promise of Nunavut. Successful candidates will receive a competitive salary, comprehensive medical and dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, relocation privileges, and opportunities for professional development.

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Primary Health Care/Nursing Practitioner Consultant will provide expert guidance and strategic recommendations on the design, delivery, and utilization of primary health care services within health centers. The incumbent will ensure that these services are effectively planned, implemented, and monitored to meet the needs of the Nunavummiut population.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Enhancing clinical nursing service quality by developing, monitoring, and evaluating clinical roles and competencies for primary health care nursing;
  • Creating and executing the territorial community Nurse Practitioner Program;
  • Conducting health surveillance and preventive initiatives to improve community health;
  • Maintaining clinical expertise by engaging in rotations within health centers;
  • Providing specialized knowledge in primary health care nursing specific to Nunavut;
  • Responding to unexpected demands in community health centers as part of a rapid response nursing team.

The qualifications for this role typically include a Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification and a minimum of three years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN). Experience in northern or rural/remote settings is considered an asset.

This position is classified as Highly Sensitive, requiring a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check.

COVID-19 vaccination is a mandatory requirement for employment. Proof of vaccination must be submitted with the application.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Resumes may be submitted in any of these languages. Fluency in multiple official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit culture, communities, and experience in a northern cross-cultural environment are also beneficial.

We encourage candidates with equivalent education and experience to apply.

Recruitment bonuses for full-time, permanent nurses include financial incentives at various milestones of service. Additional monthly retention bonuses are also available.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future vacancies.

The Government of Nunavut prioritizes creating a representative workforce, with preference given to Nunavut Inuit who self-identify under the Nunavut Agreement.

Government employees in a probationary period must obtain written authorization from their department's deputy head to apply.

Possession of a criminal record may not disqualify candidates; an assessment will be conducted based on the role's responsibilities.

Applicants with foreign education credentials must have them assessed through a recognized Canadian institution.
