Job Summary

Toronto Hydro is seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety Consultant to join our team. As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for developing and implementing effective EHS programs, leading the maintenance of EHS Management Systems, and providing reactive EHS emergency response support.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct health and safety inspections within office, construction, or industrial environments to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Develop and implement data-driven solutions to improve EHS performance, including conducting data analysis and preparing reports, proposals, and recommendations.
  • Lead and manage multiple client assignments and associated projects, including those involving internal and external resources, to ensure timely and quality delivery.
  • Support return-to-work activities, including liaising with regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor effective EHS systems, including associated programs and procedures, to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Drive continual improvement in systems, processes, technological changes, and methodology to enhance EHS performance.
  • Deliver quality and on-time completion of health and safety projects, including acting as an EHS subject matter expert on corporate or divisional projects.
  • Oversee environmental management programs, including waste management, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) management, hazardous waste management, and recycling programs.
  • Develop and deliver training for employees on EHS programs as required, ensuring a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Stay current with health and safety best practices, legislation changes, new developments, and trends to ensure Toronto Hydro remains a leader in EHS.
  • Monitor, update, and verify organization compliance with applicable safety and environmental legislation, including ISO 14001.
  • Participate in emergency response activities for environmental or health and safety incidents, including managing incident investigations to completion.
  • Provide after-hours standby support on a rotational basis to ensure 24/7 EHS coverage.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Undergraduate degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in Environment, Health & Safety, or industrial hygienist-related work.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred.
  • Post-Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Environment, Health and Safety is an asset.
  • Valid G driver's license.
  • Knowledge and experience with the development, implementation, and monitoring of an EHS management system.
  • Thorough understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Legislation and Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, and Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of return-to-work initiatives.
  • In-depth understanding of utility policies and practices, Rule Book, and other government and bylaws pertaining to distribution equipment and personnel.
  • Demonstrates an innovative approach to problem-solving and continual improvement.
  • Demonstrates an active commitment to safety.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Results-driven and strong organizational/time management skills.
  • Strong ability to influence and persuade others.
