Toronto, Ontario, Canada University Of Toronto Full time $200

Faculty/Division:
Faculty of Arts & Science

Campus:
St. George (Downtown Toronto)

The Acceleration Consortium (AC) at the University of Toronto (U of T) is at the forefront of a revolutionary transformation in scientific exploration aimed at expediting technology advancement and commercialization.

The AC represents a global network of academia, industry, and government entities that harnesses the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, materials science, and high-throughput chemistry to establish self-driving laboratories (SDLs), also referred to as materials acceleration platforms (MAPs).

These autonomous laboratories swiftly design the materials and molecules essential for a sustainable, healthy, and resilient future, with applications spanning renewable energy, consumer electronics, and pharmaceuticals.

AC Senior Research Scientists will propel the domain of AI-driven autonomous discovery and innovate the materials and molecules necessary to tackle society's most pressing challenges, including climate change, water contamination, and future health crises.

The Acceleration Consortium (AC) fosters an inclusive research atmosphere and champions the EDI priorities of the unit.
A significant Canadian First Research Excellence Grant of 200M has been awarded for a duration of seven years to establish self-driving laboratories focused on chemistry and materials, marking the largest grant ever allocated to a Canadian university. The AC is in the process of developing seven advanced SDLs along with an AI and Automation lab:

# SDL- Inorganic solid-state compounds for advanced materials and energy
# SDL- Organic small molecules for sustainability and health
# SDL- Medicinal chemistry for enhancing small molecule drug candidates
# SDL- Polymers for materials science and biological applications
# SDL- Synthetic scale-up of materials and molecules (collaboration with University of British Columbia)
# A central AI and Automation lab to support all SDLs

This position is for a Senior Research Scientist (Term, 2 years) within SDL2: Organic.
Responsibilities include the characterization of small molecules utilizing a variety of techniques such as

  • flow chemistry, photochemistry, electrochemistry, etc.
Expertise in artificial intelligence and automation is required, including

  • Robotics and automation
  • Experimental planning and design/optimization
  • Programming and high-performance computing.

The Senior Research Scientists will collaborate with a diverse team of leading experts at U of T, including both Staff Scientists and Staff Research Scientists.

While Staff Scientists are expected to possess 5 or more years of post-PhD experience, individuals with a relevant Ph.D. and associated expertise may qualify for the Staff Research Scientist role.

The Senior Research Scientists engaged in the AC are highly skilled and experienced researchers who will work autonomously to develop the AI and automation technologies necessary for constructing robust and scalable self-driving labs, managing these SDLs, and designing and implementing research programs (in alignment with the AC's scientific leadership team) that leverage the SDL platforms to discover innovative materials and molecules.

Furthermore, the Senior Research Scientists will collaborate closely, sharing knowledge among peers, faculty, and trainees. This role will report to the Academic Director and Executive Director of the Acceleration Consortium.
SDL and Automation Development

Collaborating with the AC community, including faculty and partners, to identify the necessary capabilities of the SDLs to be constructed.

Developing tailored hardware and Python software packages for SDL construction. Selecting, procuring, and installing the required equipment for SDLs.
Research Direction

Formulating research programs that utilize the AC's SDLs and support the research objectives of AC faculty and industry partners.

Employing SDLs to synthesize and characterize substantial quantities of candidate molecules, calibrating theoretical models with experimental data, predicting promising candidates through computational tools and machine learning algorithms, and elucidating structure-property relationships of emerging molecules, polymers, solid-state materials, formulations, etc.

Implementing research and development projects for AC's industry partners within AC labs.
Developing strategies that support research collaborations and planning and estimating financial resources necessary for programs and/or projects.
Collaborating with Product Managers to ensure research outcomes align with partner requirements.
Promoting AC's research capabilities, including delivering presentations at conferences.
Assisting in the preparation and submission of research proposals to funding agencies and progress reporting.
Supporting research-focused events such as the Annual Symposium.
A Ph.D. in engineering, chemistry, physics, computer science, or a related discipline is required.

1 to 5 years of experience (inclusive of PhD and/or post-graduate work) in accelerated research and development with a proven record of academic and research excellence.

  • Experience collaborating with industry partners and leading research and development projects.
  • Expert knowledge of AI and automation, along with experience in developing self-driving laboratories.
  • Experience presenting research at academic conferences.
Strong and effective communication skills in both oral and written English are essential.

  • Proven success in writing and preparing manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefs, and scientific abstracts for peer-reviewed journals.
However, priority will be given to Canadians and permanent residents.
