Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, the role involves assisting internal stakeholders by executing a range of tasks associated with the operation, upkeep, and installation of plumbing and mechanical systems across the institution's campuses. This includes the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures in restrooms and service areas, as well as managing the water supply and drainage systems within the buildings. The role also encompasses the installation, monitoring, and servicing of HVAC systems and related mechanical equipment. The incumbent will oversee repairs to water mains and drainage systems on campus, coordinating with contractors as necessary. Additional responsibilities include performing various technical maintenance tasks related to facility operations. The position may require travel between campuses based on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Plumbing Systems and Fixtures

  • Installs, services, and repairs plumbing systems and fixtures, including storm, sanitary, and water piping systems; sinks, toilets, and other restroom fixtures; water heaters, conditioners, softeners, and filters.
  • Handles HVAC systems and related equipment.
  • Conducts diagnostics, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation work on HVAC systems, including cooling, condensing water, heating, hot water, radiant, and forced air systems.
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on air handling units.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains water treatment systems, including well water pumping and distribution systems, piping, and controls.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains sewage treatment systems, including collection and distribution systems, piping, and controls.

Additional Duties:

  • Manages inventory control, including ordering parts and maintaining logs.
  • Coordinates with contracted trades as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including minor tasks from other trades where certification is not required and work remains within the incumbent's capabilities.
Qualifications

Education

  • Trade certification or equivalent from the Ontario Ministry of Skills and Development as a Plumber (Construction and Maintenance 306a), along with the completion of a related 4-year apprenticeship is mandatory.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience post-plumbing licensing.
  • Proficient knowledge of HVAC principles as they apply to typical building environments.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional settings with mechanical and plumbing systems.
  • Skilled in the installation and/or maintenance of various types of sanitary and plumbing equipment and HVAC systems.
  • Able to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications for buildings.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of steam-supplied HVAC systems.
  • Basic computer literacy is essential.

A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered equivalent to the above requirements if there are no internal applicants meeting the posted qualifications. Equivalency will be evaluated by the talent acquisition team.
