Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). As an Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with social, emotional, physical, and academic needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) by assisting the team with planning, researching, adapting, and collecting materials.
  • Provide direct educational classroom support to students in various classrooms.
  • Participate as a member of the School-Based Team to plan for, implement, and evaluate the social, emotional, physical, and academic needs of students.
  • Collect student learning and behavioral data, including records, reports, plans, and functional assessment data.
  • Assist students during dysregulation using non-violent crisis intervention strategies.
  • Monitor and support students' behavior during daily arrival, class changes, dismissal, in the lunchroom, and on field trips.
  • Assist school and district staff in evaluating students for social, emotional, physical, and academic progress.
  • Observe, monitor, and document health, behavioral, and academic changes/progress of students.
  • Assist students in carrying out programs set out by District Staff, such as Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, and Psychologists.
  • Use computers and specialized equipment to provide support and instruction.
  • Provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to students using specialized equipment and resources.
  • Provide information to appropriate staff regarding student-specific program needs.
  • Dispense medications and carry out procedures as outlined in the health care plan or the Medication Administration Form.
  • Act as an advocate for students and assist with communication.
  • Advise supervisors of any unusual student comments or behavior patterns.
  • Support students in the development of self-esteem, personal skills, hobbies, and interests.
  • Provide life skills training, such as hygiene, cooking, shopping, banking, and working.
  • Provide support with mobility, lifts, and transfers, and personal care, such as toileting, menses, clothing, catheterization, oral and tube feeds, and diapers.
  • Assist with the behavior support of students, including clarifying expected behavior, supporting self-regulation, and developing social skills.
  • Assist students during times of dysregulation using non-physical crisis intervention strategies.
  • Monitor student work and assist students with work completion.
  • Monitor classes/students when teachers are out of the room for short periods.
  • Transport and support students at community-based activities.
  • Organize and monitor the safe arrival, departure, and emergency evacuation and care of students by maintaining site, road, and traffic safety procedures.
  • Provide preventative and emergency response care for students as outlined in the Health Care Plan.
  • Compile information and materials for meetings with parents and school/district staff and participate in same.
  • Follow District Policy and Procedures related to privacy and confidentiality.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12
  • Education Assistant and Community Support Worker Certificate, or equivalent
  • One year related experience in a supervised work environment
  • Specialized relevant skills, such as POPARD Intro to ASD, Behavior Support, Non-Violent Intervention, and Basic Sign Language
  • Level One First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License (where transportation of students is required)
  • Working knowledge of computer software and hardware
  • Demonstrated use of alternative communication strategies and effective behavior intervention
