POSITION OVERVIEW

Thompson Rivers University Library is on the lookout for a tenure-track professional to fill the role of Law and Indigenous Services Librarian. This pivotal position is designed to foster relationships and develop services aimed at supporting Indigenous students and faculty, alongside enhancing library services for the Faculty of Law. The successful candidate will collaborate with various campus partners, particularly in areas of Indigenous Education, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and the Faculty of Student Development, to shape the specific responsibilities of this role. A proven ability to build trust and establish relationships with Indigenous community members is essential, as the librarian will also provide guidance on library-wide initiatives focused on decolonization and reconciliation.

Situated on traditional lands, this position will primarily be based at the main campus and may extend services to other locations.

The selected candidate will become part of a committed team of library professionals, actively contributing to the library's vision, mission, values, and strategic goals. As a faculty member, the individual will engage in professional development and service activities that align with the criteria for tenure and promotion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with fellow librarians to provide comprehensive, high-quality support to meet the research and educational needs of students and faculty.
  • Work in partnership with the Law Librarian and Library Technicians to assist law students and faculty with their research requirements, including personalized consultations.
  • Provide expertise on library-wide initiatives related to decolonization, Indigenization, and reconciliation.
  • Engage with the Librarians Department to cultivate relationships with Indigenous students, faculty, and staff, facilitating the development and delivery of instructional programs and services.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to enhance Indigenous knowledge, research, and student success, while gaining expertise in areas such as information literacy and copyright.
  • Participate in the selection and assessment of resources to enrich the Law Library collection.
  • Create and maintain research guides tailored to support academic needs.
  • Develop and implement information literacy programs.
  • Engage in library governance through the formulation of guidelines and strategic initiatives.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Participate in service activities at various levels within the department, library, university, and professional community.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master's Degree in Library Science/Information Science from an accredited program or equivalent.
  • Proven oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in an English-speaking environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and relationships with Indigenous students or community members.
  • Experience in delivering instructional sessions and creating educational materials in diverse formats.
  • Commitment to decolonization, Indigenization, and reconciliation efforts.
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for work, teaching, and learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Sustained connection to an Indigenous community or context.
  • Experience in legal research, legal citation, or providing library services to law students.
  • Basic knowledge of Secwepemctsín or other Indigenous languages.
