Library Technician Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver exceptional reference and research support both in-person and online to a varied audience, employing diverse methods and accessing a range of information resources.
  • Address inquiries, provide direction on library services and resources, and escalate complex research requests to faculty librarians.
  • Exhibit the use of library tools, technology, and resources to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Facilitate facility-use requests, ensuring adherence to library policies and regulations.
  • Contribute to essential library functions under the guidance of faculty librarians.
  • Engage in strategic planning, development of procedures, communication initiatives, and service enhancement as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain resource materials, including procedural manuals and FAQs, as instructed.
  • Assist in library orientations, outreach programs, and community engagement efforts as directed.
  • Ensure the upkeep of equipment and facilities, troubleshoot issues, and proactively report problems.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of library accounts and campus databases.
  • Process payments for library fines and manage interlibrary book exchanges.
  • Support the training of fellow technician staff members.
  • Participate in library committees and collaborative working groups.
Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Associate University Librarian.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a Library Technician Diploma (2 years)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in library or related environments
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities
  • Capacity to perform effectively under pressure and engage courteously with a diverse range of individuals
  • Proficient in electronic word processing and data entry
  • Adept at using and troubleshooting various equipment and software
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks effectively
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with library technologies
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong problem-solving skills utilizing established policies and procedures
  • Team-oriented with a proactive and independent work ethic
Work Environment
  • Involves sitting at computer workstations, standing for extended periods, and moving between various locations
  • Handling library materials, shelving books, and lifting boxes as necessary
  • Maintaining cleanliness of equipment while interacting closely with the public
  • May require rotational night and weekend service point coverage
Compensation

Salary is determined in accordance with the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879.
