Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Traffic Operations Engineer to join our team at the Ministry of Transportation. As a key member of our Operational Traffic Engineering team, you will play a lead role in conducting traffic engineering research and developing traffic engineering policies, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, review, and implement policies, standards, and specifications for traffic operations, traffic control devices, and systems, as well as highway safety initiatives.
  • Provide engineering expertise to regions, consultants, and external partners on traffic control, traffic operations, and traffic control devices and systems.
  • Manage transportation projects and provide engineering, technical, and administrative direction to staff and consultants.
  • Review new technology applications and external activities to ensure compatibility and compliance.
Requirements
  • You are licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
  • You have extensive knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of civil engineering related to highway safety and traffic engineering.
  • You have knowledge of highway safety and traffic operations, control, policies, directives, procedures, and standards, including local, national, and international standards and practices, and related legislative acts.
  • You have knowledge of roadside safety, illumination, and traffic characteristics.
  • You have knowledge of policy development and project management to develop and recommend changes to current policies, standards, and procedures and manage complex projects.
  • You have knowledge of planning and implementing changes in legislation and regulations affecting safety, traffic operations, intersection control, and new methods.
Skills and Abilities
  • You have strong planning and organizational skills to coordinate projects simultaneously.
  • You have strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills to resolve problems, develop engineering proposals, and assess ministry policy implementation in terms of project delivery and resource utilization.
  • You have advanced engineering and mathematical skills and knowledge of capacity calculations, complex intersection, and signalized intersection operations.
