Overview of the Position

In the dynamic landscape of marketplaces, growth is essential. As the leader of the Marketing Technology engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in driving customer expansion for Thumbtack. This diverse team includes professionals skilled in frontend and backend development, data engineering, and machine learning optimizations. Your collaboration with product, design, data science, and marketing teams will be crucial in shaping and executing a robust growth strategy for the company, while also developing the vital infrastructure that supports this growth and accelerates team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and expand a high-performing engineering organization that values both excellence and agility. The current team consists of 10 engineers, with plans for rapid growth.
  • Recruit and mentor senior technical leaders to enhance the organization’s capabilities and meet ambitious growth targets across various channels.
  • Collaborate closely with marketing leaders to identify their requirements and priorities, working alongside engineering, product, design, and analytics teams to establish a compelling vision and long-term growth strategy.
  • Prepare the team for successful execution by anticipating and planning for the necessary infrastructure to ensure sustained success. This may include backend systems, machine learning models, frontend frameworks for optimal page speed, or experimental setups for rapid testing and prototyping of onboarding processes within our applications.
  • Partner with fellow engineering leaders to continuously enhance Thumbtack's engineering culture in a fast-paced growth environment.

  • Proven experience in a senior engineering management position.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in developing software at scale.
  • Strong understanding of growth strategies and experience in building and scaling growth-oriented teams.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
  • A passion for guiding teams, establishing vision, nurturing leaders, and creating high-functioning organizations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to drive results.
  • Stay informed about technological advancements, capable of guiding technology evolution, and willing to engage in coding.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a growth-stage consumer technology company.
  • Familiarity with marketplace business models.
  • Background in developing marketing technology solutions.
  • Experience in managing other managers is advantageous but not essential.
