About the Position
In the dynamic landscape of marketplaces, growth is paramount. As the leader of the Marketing Technology engineering team, you will play a crucial role in driving customer expansion for Thumbtack. This team is diverse, comprising engineers with expertise in frontend and backend development, data engineering, and machine learning optimizations. Your collaboration with product, design, data science, and marketing leaders will be essential in crafting and executing a robust growth strategy for Thumbtack, while also establishing the foundational systems that facilitate this growth and empower the team to operate efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Cultivate and expand a high-performing engineering organization that emphasizes a culture of excellence alongside agility. The current team consists of 10 engineers and is expected to grow rapidly.
- Recruit and mentor senior technical leaders to scale the organization in alignment with ambitious growth objectives across both established and new channels.
- Collaborate closely with marketing leaders to grasp their requirements and priorities, and engage with engineering, product, design, and analytics teams to develop a compelling vision and long-term growth strategy.
- Prepare the team for outstanding execution by anticipating and planning for the necessary infrastructure to ensure sustained success. This may include backend systems, machine learning models, frontend infrastructure for optimal page speed, or experimental setups for rapid testing and prototyping of onboarding processes within our applications.
- Work in tandem with other engineering leaders to enhance and continuously evolve Thumbtack's engineering culture in a fast-paced growth environment.
Qualifications

- Proven experience in a senior engineering management position.
- 8-10+ years of experience in developing software at scale.
- Solid understanding of growth strategies and experience in building and scaling growth-oriented teams.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational capabilities.
- A genuine passion for leading teams, establishing vision, nurturing leaders, and constructing high-functioning organizations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve desired outcomes.
- Stay informed about technological advancements, capable of guiding technology evolution, and willing to engage in coding when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a growth-stage consumer technology company.
- Familiarity with marketplace business models.
- Background in developing marketing technology solutions.
- Experience in managing other managers is advantageous but not essential.
