About the Position

In the dynamic landscape of marketplaces, growth is paramount. This role involves spearheading the Marketing Technology engineering division, which plays a crucial role in driving customer expansion for Thumbtack. The team is diverse, comprising engineers with expertise in frontend and backend development, data engineering, and machine learning optimizations. You will collaborate with product, design, data science, and marketing leaders to formulate and implement a robust growth strategy for Thumbtack, while also establishing essential infrastructure and systems that facilitate rapid progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and expand a remarkable engineering organization that prioritizes a culture of excellence and agility. The current team consists of 10 engineers and is poised for rapid growth.
  • Recruit and mentor senior technical leaders to scale the organization in alignment with ambitious growth objectives across both established and new channels.
  • Collaborate closely with marketing leaders to comprehend their requirements and priorities, and work alongside engineering, product, design, and analytics teams to develop a compelling vision and long-term growth strategy.
  • Equip the team for outstanding execution by anticipating and planning for the necessary infrastructure to ensure long-term success. This may include backend systems, machine learning models, frontend infrastructure for optimal page speed, or experimental setups to enable swift testing and prototyping of onboarding processes within our applications.
  • Partner with fellow engineering leaders to continuously enhance Thumbtack's engineering culture in a fast-paced growth environment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a senior engineering management capacity.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in building scalable software solutions.
  • Solid understanding of growth strategies and a track record of building and scaling growth-focused teams.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
  • A passion for guiding teams, establishing vision, nurturing leaders, and creating high-performing organizations.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to drive results.
  • Stay informed about innovations, capable of steering technological advancements, and willing to engage in coding when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a growth-stage consumer technology firm.
  • Familiarity with marketplace business models.
  • Background in developing marketing technology solutions.
  • Experience in managing managers is advantageous but not essential.
