Job Overview

The Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator is tasked with ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient management of the sewage treatment plant operations. This role encompasses various responsibilities, including laboratory testing, operational decision-making, SCADA system utilization, report preparation, equipment operation, and effective team communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operate and manage both automatic and semi-automatic machinery and associated equipment, such as pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feeders, and vacuum filters, to treat wastewater through processes like settling, aeration, and sludge digestion.
  2. Monitor control panels and manually or remotely adjust valves and gates to manage flow rates.
  3. Track flow meters, gauges, pressure levels, and other controls via instrument panels and computer systems in designated areas.
  4. Document operational conditions and observations in the area shift log.
  5. Utilize SCADA for monitoring processes and controlling systems.
  6. Ensure adherence to process specifications and compliance with environmental regulations.
  7. Identify and troubleshoot basic operational issues, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  8. Report any suspected malfunctions or discrepancies to the supervisor and take appropriate corrective measures.
  9. Conduct routine and preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
  10. Engage in manual labor, including the management of machine bins and the cleaning of equipment and facilities.
  11. Perform minor maintenance tasks, including routine preventive measures and lubrication.
  12. Operate vehicles for operational purposes within the facility.
  13. Maintain cleanliness in the assigned area and dispose of waste according to safety and environmental standards.
  14. Conduct field tests (chemical, physical, and biological) to adjust chemical dosages for process and odor control.
  15. Collect samples of wastewater, sludge, and gases as per the established schedule.
  16. Prepare chemical solutions and service automatic samplers.
  17. Monitor chemical supplies and recommend reordering as needed.
  18. Perform routine laboratory tests and calibrate portable meters for various parameters.

Qualifications:

  • Valid OWWCO - WWT certification: must possess a valid class wastewater treatment and class collection certification, with the capability to obtain the highest level certification for the facility;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role;
  • Additional certifications such as first aid and confined space training are highly desirable;
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required;
  • Proficiency in the use of site-specific PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including respirators and gas detectors;
  • Aim for higher-level water treatment certification;
  • May undertake advanced functions as part of professional development;
  • Strong mechanical skills, with preference for candidates holding trade licenses (e.g., Millwright);
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately;
  • Analytical skills to interpret data and graphs, enabling informed decision-making;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations;
  • Proficient in reading, document usage, numeracy, writing, and oral communication. Strong command of the English language is essential. Must be deadline-oriented and able to collaborate effectively with others;
  • Dependable regarding start and finish times, as this impacts operations;
  • Willingness to work weekends (approximately once every 4-6 weeks);
  • Able to be on call and respond to emergencies (approximately once every 4-6 weeks).

Work Environment:

  • Physical demands include working outdoors in various weather conditions and driving company vehicles as required.
  • Worksite may involve exposure to wastewater treatment odors, confined spaces, and noisy environments.
  • Transportation/Travel Information: Personal transportation is necessary.
  • Physical requirements involve standing and walking for up to 50% of the shift, with the potential to cover distances of up to five miles. Regular use of hands for handling equipment, reaching, and communication is required. Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching may be necessary, along with the ability to lift weights up to 20 kg. Close visual observation is essential for detecting process non-conformance and machine malfunctions.
  • This is a permanent, full-time position.
