Position Overview:

The University of Toronto is at the forefront of scientific advancement through its Acceleration Consortium (AC), which is pioneering a revolutionary approach to scientific research and innovation. The AC is a collaborative network encompassing academia, industry, and governmental entities, utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and advanced materials science to develop self-driving laboratories (SDLs). These innovative labs are designed to rapidly synthesize and analyze materials and molecules essential for a sustainable and healthy future, with applications spanning renewable energy, consumer electronics, and pharmaceuticals.

Role Summary:

The Staff Research Scientist will play a critical role in the AC, focusing on the development of organic small molecules. This position is integral to addressing significant global challenges, including climate change and public health crises.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. SDL and Automation Development: Collaborate with faculty and partners to identify SDL capabilities, design automated synthesis and characterization instruments, and develop custom hardware and software solutions.
  2. Research Direction: Formulate research initiatives that leverage SDLs, synthesize and characterize candidate molecules, and utilize computational tools for predictive modeling.
  3. Collaboration and Communication: Engage with a diverse team of experts, present research findings at conferences, and contribute to grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications:

Education: Ph.D. in engineering, chemistry, physics, computer science, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 1 to 5 years of relevant experience in accelerated research and development.
  • Proven track record of collaboration with industry partners on research projects.
  • Expertise in AI and automation in the context of self-driving laboratories.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering a collegial environment.
  • Strong publication record and experience in manuscript preparation.
