Senior Research Scientist

Position Overview:
The University of Toronto is at the forefront of a revolutionary approach to scientific research through its Acceleration Consortium (AC). This initiative aims to expedite technological advancements and commercialization by harnessing the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, materials science, and high-throughput chemistry. The AC fosters a collaborative environment among academia, industry, and government, focusing on the development of self-driving laboratories (SDLs) designed to swiftly create essential materials and molecules for a sustainable future.
Role Summary:
As a Senior Research Scientist within the AI and Automation Lab, you will play a pivotal role in driving forward the field of AI-enhanced autonomous discovery. Your work will contribute to addressing critical global challenges such as climate change and public health crises.
Key Responsibilities:
- SDL and Automation Development:
- Collaborate with AC stakeholders to define SDL capabilities and develop comprehensive plans that meet user needs.
- Design innovative instruments for automated material synthesis and characterization.
- Implement customized hardware and software solutions to facilitate SDL operations.
- Research Direction:
- Independently develop research initiatives that leverage SDLs to support the scientific goals of AC faculty and industry partners.
- Utilize SDLs for the synthesis and characterization of candidate molecules, calibrating theoretical models with empirical data.
- Engage in computational modeling and machine learning to predict promising material candidates.
- Project Management:
- Oversee research and development projects in collaboration with industry partners.
- Prepare research proposals and manage project budgets effectively.
- Present research findings at academic conferences and contribute to scholarly publications.
- Consulting and Support:
- Provide consulting services related to SDL applications for materials discovery.
- Assist in organizing research-focused events and symposiums.
Qualifications:
Education: Ph.D. in a relevant field such as chemistry, materials science, or computer science.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years of experience in accelerated research and development.
- Proven track record in managing significant research projects, particularly in AI and automation.
- Expertise in AI methodologies and automation technologies.
Skills:
- Strong background in organic synthesis and analytical techniques.
- Proficient in programming and machine learning applications.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
