Toronto, Ontario, Canada University of Toronto Full time

Position Overview:

The University of Toronto is at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at revolutionizing scientific exploration through the Acceleration Consortium (AC). This collaborative effort unites academia, industry, and government to harness cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and advanced materials science to create innovative self-driving laboratories (SDLs). These autonomous facilities are designed to rapidly develop the materials and compounds essential for a sustainable and resilient future, addressing critical global challenges including climate change and public health.

Role Summary:

As a Senior Research Scientist within the AI and Automation Lab, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the field of AI-driven autonomous discovery. Your expertise will contribute to the development of essential materials and compounds necessary for tackling some of society's most pressing issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • SDL and Automation Development: Collaborate with the AC community to identify and design the capabilities required for SDLs. This includes creating SDL plans, developing automated systems for material synthesis, and implementing custom software solutions.
  • Research Direction: Independently establish research programs that utilize SDLs to support the objectives of AC faculty and industry partners. Engage in synthesizing and characterizing a wide array of candidate molecules, calibrating theoretical models, and predicting outcomes using computational tools.
  • Project Management: Oversee research and development initiatives in collaboration with industry partners, ensuring alignment with project goals and requirements. Prepare and submit research proposals, and manage progress reporting.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with a diverse team of experts, sharing knowledge and fostering a collegial environment. Present research findings at conferences and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications:

Education: Ph.D. in a relevant field such as chemistry, materials science, or computer science.

Experience:

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in accelerated research and development, particularly in organic synthesis and computational methodologies.
  • Proven track record of managing significant research projects, including integration of AI and automation technologies.
  • Strong background in collaborating with industry stakeholders on research initiatives.

Skills:

  • Proficient in organic synthesis and analytical techniques.
  • Expertise in programming and machine learning applications.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

The University of Toronto encourages applications from all qualified candidates, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive research environment.
