Position Title: Bio-Cementation Scientist 1 (NOC 21110)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee laboratory technical staff, including medical clinical personnel, graduate students, research scientists, and other specialists (1 to 2 individuals).
  • Engage in the commercialization process of novel products.
  • Collaboratively outline the technical project scope utilizing experimental design methodologies.
  • Conduct biocementation experiments leveraging enzymatically or microbially induced calcite precipitation (E/MICP).
  • Focus on primary research related to pellet and briquette formation for the mining sector.
  • Address secondary objectives involving mine tailing stabilization, dry stacking of tailings, and dust control measures.
  • Additional tasks include isolating organisms that produce urease or other carbonate-forming enzymes, along with bioaugmentation and/or biostimulation of these organisms in various geological materials.
  • Possess proficiency in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and UCS-Instron, Falcon, and Needle penetration techniques.
  • Organize and facilitate conferences and meetings.
  • Establish a consistent communication strategy regarding experimental progress.
  • Manage 2-3 laboratory projects concurrently.
  • Ensure timely achievement of 80%+ of key milestones within budget constraints or make go/no-go decisions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects, including bioinformatics and analytical characterization.
  • Foster a culture of transparency; communicate proactively, even regarding unfavorable news.
  • Maintain clear communication with Allonnia's technical team and external partners.
  • Exhibit strong written communication skills for reporting findings. Attend and present at 1-2 technical conferences annually.
  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Participate in the technology transfer process from Allonnia to deployment partners.
  • Keep detailed records of work and activities as per Standard Operating Procedures, supporting QA, QC, and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment, ensuring proper setup, cleaning, and care. Uphold safe work practices and efficient lab policies.

Educational Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Microbiology, Sustainable Resource Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. A Master's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Resource Engineering, Microbiology, or a similar field is also acceptable.

Additional Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience in experimental design within bio-cementation, MICP, or EICP.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in theoretical Biotechnology for Resource Engineering, including organizing and managing research data with a focus on accuracy and documentation.
  • Proven experience in successfully managing multiple projects.
  • Strong oversight and coordination skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with team members, management, and clients to ensure project standards are met.
  • Capability to identify risks and develop contingency plans promptly.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UV/Vis Spectroscopy; Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS); X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD); X-ray fluorescence (XRF); Phase-contrast Fluorescence Microscope; High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); Ion chromatography (IC); Scanning electron microscope (SEM); and Zeta potential.
  • Working or theoretical knowledge of non-destructive testing methods (UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration).
  • Practical experience with advanced microbial techniques (microbial culture, isolation, purification, storage, etc.); Gel electrophoresis (SDS-Native PAGE), and FTIR/ICP analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts and translate technical information into accessible language.
  • Willingness to engage in critical thinking and challenge existing ideas.

Employment Terms:

This is a full-time, permanent position with a standard 40-hour work week.

Compensation:

Annual salary of $110,000.
