Position Title: Bio-Cementation Scientist 1 (NOC 21110)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee laboratory technical staff, medical personnel, graduate students, research scientists, and other professionals (1 to 2 individuals)
  • Engage in the commercialization process of novel products
  • Collaboratively outline the scope of technical projects utilizing experimental design methodologies
  • Conduct Biocementation experiments through enzymatically or microbially induced calcite precipitation (E/MICP)
  • Focus on primary research related to pellet and briquette formation for the mining sector.
  • Secondary emphasis on mine tailing stabilization, dry stacking of tailings, and dust management
  • Additional tasks include isolating organisms that produce urease or other carbonate-forming enzymes or pathways, bioaugmentation, and/or biostimulation of these organisms in various geological materials.
  • Candidate should possess proficiency in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration techniques
  • Organize and facilitate conferences and meetings
  • Establish a consistent communication rhythm regarding experimental progress
  • Manage 2-3 laboratory projects concurrently
  • Achieve over 80% of key milestones within budget and on schedule or make go/no-go decisions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects involving bioinformatics and analytical characterization.
  • Foster transparency; communicate proactively, even regarding unfavorable news
  • Maintain clear communication with Allonnia's technical team, partners, and collaborators
  • Exhibit strong written communication skills for reporting findings. Attend and present at 1-2 technical conferences annually.
  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory analysis
  • Participate in the technology transfer process from Allonnia to deployment partners.
  • Keep detailed records of work and activities as per Standard Operating Procedures and support QA, QC, and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform maintenance on laboratory equipment, including setup, cleaning, and proper care. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and maintain effective lab policies.

Educational Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Microbiology, Sustainable Resource Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. A Master's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Resource Engineering, Microbiology, or a related field is also acceptable.

Additional Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience in experimental design related to bio-cementation, MICP, or EICP
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in theoretical Biotechnology for Resource Engineering, including organizing and managing research data with accuracy and proper documentation
  • Experience in successfully managing multiple projects
  • Strong oversight and coordination skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with team members, management, and clients to ensure project standards are met.
  • Capability to identify risks and develop contingency plans promptly.
  • Extensive knowledge of UV/Vis Spectroscopy; Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS); X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD); X-ray fluorescence (XRF); Phase-contrast Fluorescence Microscope; High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); Ion chromatography (IC); Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Zeta potential.
  • Working or theoretical understanding of non-destructive testing methods (UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration)
  • Practical experience with advanced microbial techniques (microbial culture, isolation, purification, storage, etc.); Gel electrophoresis (SDS-Native PAGE), and FTIR/ICP analysis.
  • Strong communication skills: ability to simplify complex concepts and translate technical ideas into accessible language
  • Willingness to challenge assumptions and engage in critical thinking.

Employment Terms:

This is a full-time, permanent position with a standard 40-hour work week.
