Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemical and Biological Engineering (Machine Vision)
The University of Saskatchewan is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to an innovative research initiative. This project aims to create a machine vision system for evaluating sprout damage in wheat. The role involves the development of a dual-camera machine vision system utilizing artificial neural networks and deep learning techniques, alongside the quantification of alpha-amylase activity in sprouted wheat.
This position is supported by the ADF Program and is structured as a three-year engagement, contingent upon satisfactory performance during the initial evaluation period.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be to execute research aligned with the ADF program. This includes:
- Designing and implementing a dual-camera machine vision system integrated with advanced imaging software, lighting, and display technologies.
- Assessing specific characteristics of individual wheat kernels during various sprouting stages, including germ size, color variations, grayscale fluctuations, and pixel intensity changes.
- Measuring alpha-amylase activity in sprouted wheat using near-infrared (NIR) spectrometry.
- Developing an effective classifier, utilizing algorithms or neural networks, to correlate alpha-amylase activity with imaging characteristics across different wheat varieties.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
A PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with experience in machine vision development, image processing, and AI algorithms or neural networks are preferred. Individuals in the final stages of their PhD will also be considered, provided they have a clear timeline for completion.
Experience:
The ideal candidate will possess experience in:
- Designing and constructing machine vision systems.
- Programming for imaging analysis and deep learning applications.
- Publishing research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
- Adhering to safe laboratory practices.
Skills:
- Proficiency in imaging analysis software and deep learning frameworks.
- Experience with NIR spectrometry.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong presentation skills for communicating research outcomes.
