Position Overview: Assistive Technology Specialist

Location: Remote opportunities available

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Reporting Structure: Reports to Senior Manager of Healthcare Operations & Specialized Programs

Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience

Key Responsibilities:

This role involves evaluating, recommending, and demonstrating assistive technology solutions tailored for individuals with vision loss. You will also play a vital role in educational initiatives and community awareness programs.

Core Duties Include:

  • Conducting assessments to identify the assistive technology needs of individuals with sight loss.
  • Preparing detailed assessment reports.
  • Collaborating with clients to recommend appropriate assistive technology and training solutions.
  • Assisting clients in implementing assistive technology, including setup and configuration.
  • Managing administrative tasks such as service tracking and report generation.
  • Delivering presentations and workshops on assistive technology to community organizations.
  • Demonstrating assistive technology options to various audiences.
  • Utilizing electronic assessment tools to document client goals and rehabilitation plans.
  • Contributing to workplace accommodation assessments for individuals with vision loss.
Relationship Management:
  • Providing support and guidance to clients and their support networks regarding vision loss adjustments.
  • Enhancing awareness of assistive technology through public education and training.
  • Participating in team meetings and collaborative efforts.
  • Building partnerships with funding agencies, educational institutions, and other organizations.
  • Assisting in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.
Problem Solving and Decision Making:
  • Delivering timely assessments to help clients choose suitable assistive technology.
  • Resolving unique client needs with creativity and efficiency.
  • Supporting clients in utilizing assistive technology and troubleshooting related issues.
Qualifications:
  • Experience working with individuals of all ages experiencing sight loss.
  • Understanding of low vision principles and their implications for technology use.
  • Familiarity with various disabilities and their impact on assistive technology selection.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to make informed decisions and solve problems effectively.
  • Professional demeanor and self-motivation.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to a client-centered approach.
  • Experience with assistive technology and client management systems.
Education and Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in technology or a related field.
  • Training or certification in teaching and training methodologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of assistive technology for vision loss.
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
Work Environment:
  • Services are provided in various settings, including community locations.
  • Flexibility in work hours is required.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 15 kilograms.
