Position: Manager, Underwriting
Reports To: VP, Chief Underwriter
Department: Individual
Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangement: This role is hybrid. You will be required to work in our office a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, along with a fifth (5th) assigned day each month. Additional office presence is encouraged, and some roles may necessitate more frequent office attendance.

About the Role: Equitable is expanding, and we are in search of an Underwriting Manager to guide our team of Individual Underwriters. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the top employers in the Waterloo Area and Southwestern Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough technical risk evaluations for individual life and critical illness insurance.
  • Oversee ongoing underwriting processes, ensuring effective workload distribution, team objectives, process optimization, and personnel management.
  • Recruit, nurture, and retain a cohesive and motivated team, while assessing individual and team performance through annual evaluations.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to team members and facilitate the annual performance and talent review process.
  • Focus on continuous improvement, balancing quality and efficiency in underwriting practices.
  • Establish strong relationships with key brokerage firms and internal distribution partners, mentoring the team to do the same.
  • Collaborate with leaders in underwriting and Individual Insurance to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication with the underwriting team, leadership, and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage and support cross-functional initiatives that align with departmental, divisional, and corporate goals.

Qualifications:

  • College or University degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in Individual Insurance with demonstrated underwriting expertise.
  • Familiarity with individual products, underwriting policies, procedures, workflows, and administrative systems.
  • Proven leadership and employee development skills.
  • Ability to negotiate and excel in a cross-functional environment.
  • Understanding of the complexities within the Individual marketplace and competitive landscape.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to share knowledge effectively in a team setting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining regular consultation with the Chief Underwriter.
  • Proactive, service-oriented, and results-driven with a sense of urgency.
  • FLMI / FALU designation or currently pursuing.
