RESPONSIBILITIES

Memorial University's Office of Development and Alumni Engagement is on the lookout for two seasoned fundraising experts to enhance a team dedicated to supporting educational and research advancements, transforming lives, boosting the province's economic development, and inspiring future leaders. The successful candidate(s) will oversee a varied portfolio of essential donor relationships, including individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Lead Philanthropy Strategist- Central will report to the Associate Director, Development, while the Lead Philanthropy Strategist- Medicine will have dual reporting to the Dean of Medicine and the Associate Director, Development.

The selected candidate(s) will be tasked with executing fundraising strategies and initiatives that align with the university's philanthropic objectives and campaigns. They will maintain a portfolio of active donors and manage prospects or donors with leadership potential, emphasizing timely and precise moves management practices to optimize revenue through philanthropic commitments. Additional responsibilities include managing and mentoring Development staff, overseeing campaign fundraising, ensuring proper administration of processes, and performing other related duties as required.

The Lead Philanthropy Strategist will establish and implement a comprehensive strategy and operational plan for overall fundraising and specific campaigns or initiatives. This includes achieving a personal annual fundraising performance target as part of the university's overarching fundraising goal; collaborating with the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement senior leadership and the Faculty of Medicine (as applicable) to identify fundraising priorities and create an ambitious yet attainable annual fundraising plan for the role; designing, executing, managing, and assessing strategies and tactics to solicit significant gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations; and personally managing a major gift portfolio that includes individuals, foundations, and corporations. For individual donors, these are often prominent senior professionals—business leaders and well-known figures in the local, national, or international community.

The Central Officer is responsible for developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of the university's activities, priorities, and needs in teaching, research, and public engagement, applying this knowledge to align the interests and needs of prospective donors with the university's strategic requirements; preparing written materials, in collaboration with communications staff where appropriate, including case statements, tailored proposals, progress reports, briefing notes, campaign materials (including for volunteers), and prospect correspondence; collaborating with academic leaders on fundraising strategies to support the execution of fundraising calls and solicitations; identifying, recruiting, managing, and motivating external volunteers, as necessary, to assist in fundraising efforts; and consistently acting as an advocate and ambassador for the university.

The Lead Philanthropy Strategist will ensure the proper administration of fundraising management and campaign processes while taking on additional responsibilities as needed. This includes documenting, tracking, and reporting on activities to relevant internal and/or external stakeholders; managing the flow of information, expectations, and results on an ongoing basis; and developing an annual performance plan that is reviewed against outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Extensive experience (5-7 years) in resource development, relationship management, sales, business development, and/or fundraising, preferably within the education, healthcare, or non-profit sectors; a degree from a four-year college or university; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Additional qualifications include exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written), active listening skills, proven leadership capabilities, strong organizational skills, effective negotiation skills, and the ability to manage relationships with integrity and commitment to an academic environment; sound judgment and decision-making abilities; the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively; the ability to thrive under pressure and manage multiple timelines; organizational skills including planning and organizing complex fundraising programs and high-impact projects with minimal supervision; a proven track record in developing fundraising strategies that support organizational goals, cultivating prospective donors, and securing major gifts; and the ability to exercise a high level of sophistication, tact, and discretion in both internal and external interactions. Experience in managing fundraising staff and familiarity with Memorial University would be advantageous. A willingness to work non-traditional hours, attend events, and travel regularly is required. CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) designation would be a plus.
