Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Communications Engineer to join our Rail & Transit division. This role is pivotal in providing expert technical support and guidance within our multidisciplinary projects. You will act as the key technical authority on communications aspects related to contracts and proposals, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.

As a vital member of the Rail Systems Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to shape processes and implement strategies across various projects. You will receive support from management to develop effective work plans, engage with clients and stakeholders, and lead internal design teams, enhancing your leadership capabilities in a consulting environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary technical resource in developing advanced concepts, methodologies, and standards in communication engineering;
  • Deliver senior-level communication design for public transit and railway projects;
  • Engage in validation and verification processes, producing necessary test procedures and troubleshooting as required;
  • Oversee the creation of design reports, drawings, and technical specifications;
  • Conduct technical reviews of communication systems for design submissions and respond to RFIs;
  • Utilize your design expertise and experience to deliver exceptional projects;
  • Collaborate with clients and vendors to establish KPIs for communication system analysis;
  • Draft communications requirements for wired/wireless networks and RF design;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Core Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution recognized by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA);
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Alberta (P. Eng.) or equivalent, with the ability to obtain a P.Eng. license in Alberta;

Technical Skills:

  • Extensive experience in communications design and/or operations within the public transit sector or similar fields;
  • Proven expertise in at least two of the following areas:
    • Data network design, including knowledge of network products, TCP/IP architectures, routing, switching, network security, and MPLS principles;
    • Experience in the design, installation, and operation of radio systems, including TETRA and/or P25, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and leaky coax antennas for rail applications;
    • Ability to create high-level conceptual designs for communications systems in public rail transit operations;
    • Design and commissioning experience relevant to communication systems for public rail transit, including CCTV, PA, VMS, and telephone systems;
    • Experience in designing and commissioning outside plant infrastructure, including fiber optics;
  • Knowledge of rail and public transit operations is advantageous;
  • Familiarity with CBTC-based signaling systems and driverless train control is a strong asset;
  • Attention to detail in specifications and project timelines;
  • RCDD certification is a plus;
  • CISSP certification with experience in operational technology environments is beneficial;

Non-Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities;
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and across various business units with minimal supervision;
  • Experience collaborating with architects and engineering disciplines to define communication requirements and advocate for project needs;
  • Adaptability to changes in project direction and priorities;
  • Strong proficiency in computer applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, leadership, and report writing, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving;
  • Experience in a Consulting Engineering or EPC environment is an asset.
