Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Communications Engineer to join our Rail & Transit division. This role is pivotal in supporting our Transportation Systems team, where you will leverage your expertise in wired and wireless network security. As a senior technical authority, you will provide comprehensive support to the Rail Systems delivery team and collaborate with industry partners. Your role will encompass offering technical guidance on all communication-related aspects of contracts and proposals, as well as managing telecommunications design within multidisciplinary projects to ensure compliance with relevant standards and specifications.

As part of the Rail Systems Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to shape processes and implement strategies across various projects. You will receive support from management in developing work plans, effectively communicating with clients and stakeholders, and leading internal design teams to cultivate your leadership skills in a consulting environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the senior technical resource in developing advanced concepts, techniques, and standards in communication engineering;
  • Deliver senior-level communication design efforts for public transit and railway projects;
  • Engage in validation and verification activities, producing test procedures and contributing to troubleshooting efforts;
  • Oversee the production of design reports, drawings, and technical specifications;
  • Conduct technical reviews of communication systems for design submissions and RFI responses;
  • Utilize your design expertise and knowledge from previous successful projects to deliver high-quality outcomes;
  • Collaborate with clients and vendors to establish KPIs for communication system analysis;
  • Generate communication requirements for wired/wireless networks and RF design;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Core Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution recognized by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA);
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Alberta (P. Eng.) or equivalent, with the capability to obtain a P.Eng. license in Alberta;

Technical Expertise:

  • Extensive experience in communications design and/or operations within the public transit sector or similar industries;
  • Proven proficiency in at least two of the following areas:
    • Data network design, including knowledge of network products and TCP/IP architectures, encompassing routing, switching, network security, and MPLS design principles;
    • Experience in the design, installation, and/or operation of radio systems, including TETRA and/or P25, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and leaky coax antennas for rail applications;
    • Ability to create high-level conceptual designs for communications systems used in public rail transit operations;
    • Design and commissioning experience relevant to communication systems for public rail transit, including CCTV, PA, VMS, and telephone systems;
    • Demonstrated experience in designing and commissioning outside plant infrastructure, including fiber optics;
  • Knowledge of rail and public transit operations is advantageous;
  • Familiarity with CBTC-based signaling systems, block signaling control systems, and driverless train control is a strong asset;
  • Attention to detail regarding specifications and project timelines;
  • RCDD certification is a plus;
  • CISSP certification with experience in OT environments is beneficial;

Non-Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities;
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and across various business units in a matrix organization with minimal supervision;
  • Experience collaborating with architects and engineering disciplines to define communication requirements and advocate for project needs;
  • Adaptability to changes in project direction and priorities in a deadline-driven environment;
  • Strong proficiency in computer applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication, presentation, leadership, and report writing, with a strong inclination to collaborate in problem-solving within an integrated team setting;
  • Experience in a Consulting Engineering or EPC environment is advantageous.
