Job Summary

The University of Waterloo seeks a highly experienced and skilled Senior Manager to lead the Mass Spectrometry Facility. This is a key position responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of the facility, ensuring it remains a world-class resource for research and education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facility Management
    • Provide expert research support and guidance to faculty members and students across the University of Waterloo, as well as external partners and industries.
    • Develop and implement strategies for the facility's growth, operations, and infrastructure, in consultation with the Department Chair and Dean of Science.
    • Work with administrative units to enhance facility visibility, funding opportunities, outreach, and business development.
    • Offer technical expertise and support for users, including experimental strategy, troubleshooting, and data interpretation.
  • Financial Administration
    • Ensure the facility operates on a revenue-neutral basis, with expenses offset by user charges.
    • Establish and review pricing policies for services provided, in consultation with the Department Chair and Mass Spectrometry Users Committee.
    • Manage billing, internal charges, and external invoicing, in collaboration with the Department Financial Officer.
  • Training and Development
    • Develop and implement training programs for users, including user guides, procedures, and safety protocols.
    • Provide technical training and support for users, including new graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
    • Train and manage facility support personnel, including the technician and student helpers.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Ensure safety protocols are in place and maintained, including WHMIS, hazardous waste disposal, and equipment certifications.
    • Complete monthly safety inspections and report any issues to the Department and Safety Office.
  • Other Duties
    • Manage and update the facility's website, including content development and maintenance.
    • Represent the facility in the Faculty of Science and on university-wide projects and committees, as needed.
    • Stay up-to-date with new technologies and capabilities in mass spectrometry and implement new techniques and equipment as time and budget permit.
    Qualifications
    • Master's degree in Chemistry with a focus on Mass Spectrometry.
    • At least 10 years of experience in organic/analytical mass spectrometry.
    • At least 5 years of experience in facility management.
    • Relevant postdoctoral experience.
    • Strong understanding of mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry, and related fields.
    • Expertise in guiding users through complex methods and data interpretation.
    • Working knowledge of facility hardware and software, including Waters, Thermo Scientific, Bruker, and Agilent platforms.
    • Knowledge of safety procedures for mass spectrometers and scientific equipment.
    • Proven ability to maintain and repair mass spectrometers and communicate with users.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite and mass spectrometry vendor software.
    • Advanced computer skills, including Windows and IOS-based programming.
