About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Business Strategist to join our team at the City of Calgary. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in developing, producing, and implementing corporate, organizational, and service policies, bylaws, council reports, business plans, strategies, project plans, and workplans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Divisional Teams: Direct and lead Fire and Emergency Response, Fire Inspection and Enforcement, and Fire Safety Education strategies and plans.
  • Research and Analysis: Research information on emerging or persisting operational needs and prepare an ongoing backlog of opportunities or projects to affect performance measures.
  • Quality Management: Support quality management programs, identify and assess existing capabilities, and prioritize projects.
  • Project Implementation: Analyze opportunities and risks, consult with key internal and external partners, and implement projects, develop plans, change policy, or prepare strategic recommendations.
  • Business Case Development: Elicit requirements, develop business cases, project charters, and implementation plans.
  • Collaboration and Facilitation: Facilitate discussions, workshops, and service teams to identify achievable actions for complex cross-corporate and cross-sector collaborations.
  • Review and Analysis: Review projects, policies, reports, briefings, proposals, and draft Council notices of motion to identify concerns, potential issues, solutions, and service improvement opportunities.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Public Administration or a related field and at least 5 years of related experience; OR a master's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of related experience.
  • A master's degree with a focus on strategic management is preferred.
  • Highly skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite, digital platforms, and business applications.
  • Experience working with geospatial information, and municipal growth, planning, and policy information, as well as reviewing detailed statistical analysis is preferred.
  • Experience in technical writing, facilitation, emergency management, operations management, quality management, strategic planning, lean, agile, and/or project management will be considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a large, complex, and highly regulated services organization will be an asset.
  • Success in this position requires the following competencies:
    • Detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to work independently.
    • Demonstrated ability to run effective meetings.
    • Strong communication and facilitation skills with the ability to influence others and build consensus.
    • Strategic and analytical thinking; exceptional planning and organization skills; and the ability to adjust priorities within tight deadlines.
    • A high level of diplomacy when dealing with politically sensitive materials/subjects, adeptness at problem solving, and demonstrated positive collaboration and relationship building skills.
