Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Academic Chair to lead our Nursing Studies Department at Algonquin College. The successful candidate will provide academic leadership, manage departmental operations, and ensure the delivery of high-quality programs that meet the needs of our students and the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic direction for the Department, aligning with the College's plan and deploying resources accordingly.
  • Lead the development and implementation of new academic programs, ensuring they reflect current technology, economic trends, and market influences.
  • Build partnerships with external communities, school boards, academic agencies, and universities to advance the Faculty's vision and mission.
  • Assess and respond to student needs, provide leadership in diverse health forums, and ensure effective supervision of teaching and learning processes.
  • Facilitate communication between faculty and support staff, fostering collaboration to support departmental and college objectives.
  • Direct teaching activities, recruit and develop faculty and staff, and promote their ongoing professional development.
  • Conduct investigations, resolve disputes, and advise students, referring them to appropriate resources.
  • Recommend full-time faculty and support staff appointments to the Dean and hire part-time and temporary staff.
  • Provide academic leadership in curriculum review and ensure adherence to program quality assurance processes.
  • Implement initiatives from College and Government authorities, including strategic plans and essential employability skills.
  • Establish learning outcomes for programs in accordance with College and Ministry policies and external agencies.
  • Build relationships with industry representatives, advisory committee members, professional associations, and participate in student recruitment and graduate placement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and establish safe environment procedures.
  • Ensure the financial viability of the department through analysis of enrolment data, space utilization, and program costing.
  • Manage staff workloads, course loading, and equipment requirements to ensure efficient department operations.
Requirements
  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Health Discipline; Health Administration or related fields required; PhD preferred.
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) RN registration with no restrictions. Applicants who are currently licensed to practice in Canada as a Registered Nurse with no restrictions and have an active application with CNO may be considered.
  • Minimum of nine (9) years related experience in increasingly responsible roles, including a minimum of two (2) years spent in a supervisory/management role.
  • Demonstrated strong background in education/training through either prior teaching, curriculum development, and/or educational consultancy.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to student success, teaching excellence, quality education and experiential learning, preferably within a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated management style which nurtures individual initiative and creativity, within the context of organizational goals.
  • Strong communications, leadership, and interpersonal skills that make you a consensus builder, who can articulate an academic vision and execute on plans.
  • Excellent group facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated superior organizational, planning, and financial management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage the external community and develop partnership linkages.
