YESS is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting youth who are navigating challenging circumstances. Our Youth Support Centre (YSC) is designed to offer immediate and accessible 24/7 support, including safe sleeping arrangements and personalized wrap-around services for young individuals.

We strive to prevent youth homelessness by equipping young people with essential resources to stabilize their living situations, enhance their well-being, develop life skills, foster community connections, and reduce the likelihood of returning to homelessness.

Role Overview

The Intake/Transition Youth Worker plays a crucial role in ensuring that all youth accessing crisis shelter services experience a secure and nurturing environment. This position requires delivering high-quality care through a trauma-informed approach while modeling socially and professionally acceptable behaviors. Responsibilities include assessing and triaging youth based on their skills and capacities, and collaborating with various departments and partners to formulate safety plans tailored to individual needs.

Work Schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off

Working Hours: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a consistent and transparent intake process for youth.
  • Evaluate the risks and vulnerabilities of individuals and implement suitable risk management strategies.
  • Conduct intake tours and clearly communicate program expectations to new clients.
  • Foster relationships with youth, community resources, and family connections.
  • Encourage positive interactions to enhance social skills and recreational opportunities.
  • Provide accurate referrals and maintain a comprehensive understanding of community resources and YESS programming.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop holistic life skills plans for youth.
  • Design and assess transition pathways for youth, supporting them as they move out of care.
  • Maintain documentation and enter information into the database.
  • Perform clerical tasks to support youth goals and team communication.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively, prioritizing safety and security according to agency standards.

  • Exceptional organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proven capacity to cultivate positive relationships.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience in providing trauma-informed support.
  • Respectful demeanor and ability to serve as a role model for youth.

The successful candidate will ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for youth, demonstrating a harm reduction mindset and proficiency in suicide intervention and safety planning. They will also be adept at building community support connections.

Qualifications:

  • A Certificate, Degree, or Diploma in Child & Youth Care or a related Human Services field.
  • A minimum of two to five years of experience working in shelters with high-risk and at-risk youth.
  • Knowledge of the values, beliefs, and practices of Aboriginal and diverse cultural groups.
  • Experience with ETO is considered an asset.
  • CYCAA Child and Youth Care certification is an asset.

Prerequisites:

  • Training in first aid and/or non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Training in suicide intervention and harm reduction.
  • Trauma-Informed Care Training.
  • Clear police clearance and Child and Youth Intervention checks, obtained within the last six months.
  • Valid driver's license and driver's abstract.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance (minimum $1 million third-party liability).
  • Basic computer skills.
