We are currently in search of a dedicated Full-Time Permanent Youth Support Specialist to provide essential assistance at our Youth Support Centre.

As a not-for-profit organization, Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS) is committed to supporting young individuals facing challenging circumstances. Our Youth Support Centre operates around the clock, offering immediate and accessible sleep support alongside personalized wrap-around services for youth.

Our Mission

YESS focuses on preventing youth homelessness by equipping young people with the necessary resources to stabilize their living situations, enhance their overall wellbeing, develop life skills, engage with their communities, and prevent re-entry into homelessness.

Role Overview

The Youth Support Specialist will ensure that all young individuals accessing crisis shelter services experience a secure and nurturing environment. The specialist will deliver high-quality care through a trauma-informed approach, modeling socially and professionally acceptable behaviors. Responsibilities include assessing and prioritizing the needs of youth while collaborating with various departments and partners to formulate safety plans.

Shift Schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off

Working Hours: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a consistent and transparent intake process for youth.
  • Evaluate the risk and vulnerability of individuals and implement appropriate risk management strategies.
  • Conduct intake tours and clarify program expectations to new clients.
  • Foster relationships with youth, community resources, and family connections.
  • Encourage positive interactions to enhance social skills and recreational opportunities.
  • Provide accurate referrals and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of community resources and YESS programming.
  • Collaborate with other departments to create holistic life skills plans for youth.
  • Develop and assess transition pathways for youth, supporting them as they move out of care.
  • Maintain documentation and enter information into a database.
  • Perform clerical duties to support youth goals and team communication.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively, prioritizing client safety and security according to agency standards.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proven capacity to build positive relationships.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience supporting youth through a trauma-informed lens.
  • Respectful demeanor and role model qualities for youth.

The candidate will ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for youth, possessing a harm reduction mindset and skills in crisis intervention and safety planning.

Qualifications Required

  • A Certificate, Degree, or Diploma in Child & Youth Care or a related Human Services field.
  • A minimum of two to five years of experience working with high-risk and at-risk youth in shelter settings.
  • Understanding of the values and practices of diverse cultural groups.
  • Experience with ETO is an asset.
  • CYCAA Child and Youth Care certification is a plus.

Prerequisites

  • Training in first aid and/or non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Training in suicide intervention and harm reduction.
  • Trauma-Informed Care Training.
  • Clear police clearance and Child and Youth Intervention checks, obtained recently.
  • Valid driver's license and driver's abstract.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Basic computer skills.
