Job Description

**Job Summary**

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Official to join our team at destinationone Consulting. As a Building Official, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes, regulations, and municipal bylaws. This is a complex supervisory role that requires strong leadership and technical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate Building Officials and other staff engaged in reviewing, inspectional, and regulatory duties.
  • Meet with owners, contractors, tradesmen, engineers, and architects to discuss and resolve problems and to investigate and report upon complaints.
  • Check plans and specifications prior to permit issuance and approve or reject proposed installations or construction.
  • Ensure consistent application of Part 3 and 9 of the BC Building Code and identify the need for interpretations.
  • Assist a superior in developing policies and procedures and recommending changes to regulations and bylaws.
  • Maintain liaison with other departmental trades supervisors to ensure effective coordination of inspections and consistency of training.
  • Gather and present evidence in court in respect to violations as required.
  • Perform related work as required.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices related to the trades inspectional field of responsibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of the relevant municipal bylaws and provincial regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Considerable knowledge of the departmental policies, procedures, and practices related to the work.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply the BC Building Code, bylaws, regulations, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate staff.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions pertaining to structural stability of buildings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to assist in developing policies and procedures and to prepare a variety of reports related to the work.

Desirable Training and Experience

  • Completion of a diploma in Building Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution plus considerable related experience, preferably as a Building Official.

Required Licences, Certificates, and Registrations

  • BOABC Level 3 Certification.
  • Registration as a Building Official with the BOABC.
  • Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
