Role Summary
The Krembil Research Institute (KRI) at UHN is inviting applications for a permanent full-time Senior Research Scientist II position. This role involves overseeing the establishment and management of a preclinical platform focused on animal behavior, in vivo imaging, and optogenetics. The platform will serve as an open-access facility, providing essential hardware, molecular tools, behavioral suites, training, and expertise to facilitate innovative research by KRI scientists and trainees.

Key Responsibilities
The Senior Research Scientist II will collaborate with a diverse group of Principal Investigators across various health science disciplines (including neuroscience, rheumatology, and ophthalmology). The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Managing the daily operations of the platform, including supervision and support of laboratory personnel and trainees, procurement and upkeep of equipment and materials, and financial oversight as necessary;
  • Introducing new optical-based technologies through partnerships with external laboratories;
  • Designing and developing novel software and hardware components to enhance the platform's capabilities;
  • Collaborating closely with Principal Investigators and users to establish standard operating procedures;
  • Providing training and support to research staff and trainees on the operation and research applications of the facility's equipment, implementing behavioral assays, and analyzing data;
  • Contributing to the preparation and development of research grant proposals;
  • Assisting in the regular reporting of metrics and progress to present to an Advisory Committee and other leadership, discussing strategies for optimizing the facility.

The Senior Research Scientist II is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and sound judgment. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to gather necessary information and knowledge to develop procedures, implement, analyze, and interpret research program data autonomously.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Neuroscience, Physiology, Anatomy, or a related field;
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience with behavioral and optogenetic techniques, single-cell imaging, electrophysiology, neuronal targeting, and small animal surgery, demonstrated through high-quality publications;
  • Proficiency in current biological light-based tools and a strong network for acquiring cutting-edge technologies;
  • Expertise in the use of miniature microscopes and in vivo imaging techniques;
  • Ability to operate and maintain complex optogenetics and related equipment;
  • Proven leadership, communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills;
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate academic research objectives and findings to diverse audiences;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor;
  • Excellent leadership abilities with a focus on mentoring and coaching others.
