Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager of Maternal Care and Surgical Services, the Nurse Specialist (NS) is an integral member of a multidisciplinary care team, delivering holistic, evidence-informed care tailored to the needs of patients and their families. The NS will be responsible for managing care for both high-risk prenatal patients and post-operative surgical cases, particularly in breast health and gynecology. The NS will lead nursing assessments and oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of patient and family care aimed at promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting end-of-life care when necessary. The NS will engage in a variety of functions to provide healthcare, emphasizing thorough assessments, patient and family education, and care coordination. The NS will adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the Canadian Nurses Association and the regulatory guidelines of the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia.

Work Schedule

11.25 hour shifts; Monday to Friday, including weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications


• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is mandatory (candidates with equivalent experience and education may be considered).

• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.

• Current certification in CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last year is required.

• Experience in Obstetrical Nursing is preferred.

• Recent experience in medical-surgical acute care is advantageous.

• Successful candidates are expected to cross-train across all patient populations within six months of employment.

• Experience in grief counseling and support for families experiencing perinatal loss is preferred.

• Current completion of NRP is required within the first three months of employment.

• Experience in Family-Centered Care with perinatal populations is an asset.

• Proficiency in additional languages is considered beneficial.
