Library Technician Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver exceptional reference and research support both in-person and online to a diverse user base, employing various methods and accessing a wide range of information resources.
  • Address inquiries, provide direction on library services and resources, and escalate complex research requests to senior librarians.
  • Showcase the use of library tools, technology, and resources to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Facilitate facility-use requests, ensuring adherence to library policies and standards.
  • Contribute to essential library functions under the guidance of senior librarians.
  • Engage in strategic planning, policy development, communication efforts, and service enhancement as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain resource documentation, including procedural guides and FAQs, as instructed.
  • Assist in library orientation sessions, outreach programs, and community engagement initiatives as directed.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities are properly maintained, troubleshoot issues, and proactively report problems.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of library accounts and campus databases.
  • Process payments for library fines and manage interlibrary book exchanges.
  • Support the training of fellow technician staff members.
  • Participate in library committees and collaborative working groups.
Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Associate University Librarian.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a Library Technician Diploma (2 years)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in library or related environments
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure and engage courteously with a diverse audience
  • Proficient in electronic word processing and data entry
  • Experienced in utilizing and troubleshooting various technologies and software
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and task prioritization
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with library technologies
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong problem-solving skills in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently
Work Environment
  • Involves sitting at computer workstations, standing for extended periods, and moving between various locations
  • Includes handling library materials, shelving books, and lifting boxes
  • Maintaining cleanliness of equipment and engaging closely with the public
  • May require rotational coverage during evenings and weekends
Compensation

Salary is established in accordance with the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879.
