Position: Group Leader – EXCEL Program
Overview of Responsibilities: The Group Leader for the EXCEL Program plays a vital role in the effective functioning of the program at the educational site. This position involves receiving daily guidance from the Program Team Leader to execute program strategies, leading students in diverse environments such as classrooms, activity zones, and outdoor areas, while also directing and facilitating a range of indoor and outdoor games and activities. The Group Leader is tasked with overseeing a designated group of students and collaborates closely with the team, reporting directly to the Program Team Leader of the EXCEL Program.
Essential Competencies:
- Ability to supervise children across various environments;
- Capability to treat all students with respect, fairness, and consideration for their physical, social, and emotional development;
- Skill in responding appropriately to student-initiated interactions;
- Sound judgment in managing chaotic or conflict situations;
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
- Ability to monitor and implement standard health practices;
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations;
- Willingness to take direction from supervisors;
- Ability to lead and engage in recreational activities;
- Capacity to work effectively within a team;
- Effective communication with parents, staff, and students within the Halifax Regional Centre for Education;
- Commitment to promoting diversity, human rights, and cross-cultural understanding;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality;
- Desire for ongoing professional development and training.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education or a degree in Child Studies, Recreation, or relevant experience in a child care or recreation setting;
- High School Diploma or equivalent;
- Experience in a professional child care or recreation environment;
- Physical capabilities aligned with job requirements, including personal and physical care;
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
Key Responsibilities: The Group Leader in the EXCEL Program will undertake tasks assigned by the Program Team Leader, which may evolve over time and include, but are not limited to:
- Designing, implementing, and assessing structured recreational activities;
- Maintaining daily attendance records;
- Documenting incidents and accidents following established protocols;
- Actively engaging in the development and execution of the program plan;
- Ensuring a safe environment through student supervision;
- Assisting students with personal care and hygiene needs;
- Facilitating students' preparation for and participation in outdoor activities;
- Leading outdoor play and activities;
- Conducting general clean-up at the end of program sessions;
- Encouraging positive interactions among students;
- Administering medication as directed by the Program Team Leader and/or Recreation Programmer;
- Providing feedback on student observations to relevant parties;
- Addressing inquiries from parents and school staff;
- Distributing program materials as necessary;
- Participating in staff meetings and training sessions;
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Program Team Leader/Recreation Programmer.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Casual
Compensation: $18.28 per hour
Expected Hours: 20 – 30 hours per week
