Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Anesthesia Assistant Trainee to join our team at Fraser Health. As a key member of our surgical team, you will provide technical support and clinical assistance with anesthesia procedures, under the direct supervision of an Anesthesiologist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of patients for surgery and ensure patient comfort by providing psycho-social support pre-operatively and during the induction phase of anesthesia.
  • Assist with pre and post-operative assessment of patients by performing an anesthetic risk and airway assessment and determining the general physical status of the patient.
  • Advise the Anesthesiologist of the patient's status and assist in preparing, testing, and maintaining the integrity of equipment for use in anesthesia.
  • Identify malfunctions, carry out minor maintenance, and liaise with Biomedical Engineering and/or vendors to maintain optimal performance of equipment.
  • Assist with the induction of anesthesia, including providing management of airway, establishing ventilation, and procuring intravenous and arterial lines.
  • Assist the Anesthesiologist with perioperative fiber optic airway procedures and monitor patients' physiological response to procedural stimulation/medication.
  • Administer prescribed pharmacological agents to the patient under the direction of the Anesthesiologist and observe side effects and efficacy of treatment during anesthesia.
  • Initiate mechanical ventilation and titrate the anesthetic according to care plan to ensure optimal maintenance of anesthesia.
  • Monitor and adjust ventilation modalities as required to ensure adequate patient ventilation and oxygenation.
  • Assist with the documentation of patient data on the Anesthesia Record and assist with patient emergence from anesthesia.
  • Assist the Anesthesiologist in transporting the patient to the recovery room or other designated area and assist with patient transfer in and out of the Operating Room.
  • Respond and assist with intraoperative crises, such as cardiac arrest and malignant hyperthermia response, within the perioperative units.
  • Assist with providing diagnostic data for the Anesthesiologist and maintain an inventory of anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in the infection control program and maintain and develop professional knowledge by attending educational/training events.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • One year of experience in an acute care hospital environment or equivalent.
  • Active enrolment in the Thompson River's University (TRU) Anesthesia Assistant post-diploma program and the ability to start the Anesthesia Assistant program with all required prerequisite courses completed.

  • Ability to plan and implement anesthesia-related plans of care.
  • Ability to deal effectively with patients, families, staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Skill in CPR techniques.
  • Skill in the use of related medical equipment and supplies.
  • Computer skills, including the ability to effectively use a computerized patient care information system.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
