About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled professional to lead our Applied Physics Branch as a Branch Manager. As a key member of our Safety and Security Directorate, you will be responsible for managing the resources and activities in support of our organization's missions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Successfully support the execution of projects and programs to meet customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the vision and mission for our organization, the Safety and Security Directorate, and the Science and Technology department.
  • Review, refine, and adjust work and deliverables based on knowledge of the technical area, environment, policy, customers, and marketplace.
  • Identify and pursue research growth by anticipating client and market needs.
  • Define, develop, and lead collaborations that deliver growth in programs and capabilities.
  • Develop commercialization opportunities to drive program growth and our organization's impact.
  • Provide aspirational leadership for the branch.
  • Ensure safe, secure, and compliant operations in the branch.
  • Nurture and enhance the scientific capabilities - staff, facilities, and equipment - in the branch.
  • Responsibilities include management of up to ~ 50 staff members, an overhead operating budget of between $300 to $500k, and oversight of work valued at between $5M to $20M in labour and materials.
  • Shared responsibility for the effective management of the Safety & Security Directorate, meeting directorate, S&T, and our organization's requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
Requirements
  • A Degree from a University of recognized standing; a Ph.D. or Master's degree in Physics or related scientific field is preferred.
  • 10 to 12 years technical project/process experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years in a leadership role is required.
  • A broad scientific/engineering/management background, acquired through formal education is required.
  • Experience in innovation and program/project management, which includes management of people, processes, customers, and financial performance is required.
  • Passion for science, technology, and discovery.
  • Excellent understanding of effective leadership concepts, skill sets, application, and training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in working with management and staff of the organization and building a team approach.
  • Ability to foster a team environment by understanding and managing group dynamics under pressure.
  • A proven record in demonstrating leadership of technical organizations dealing with a diverse group of internal and external customers.
  • Exceptional technical knowledge and in-depth understanding of analytical principles, instrument trouble-shooting, and audit processes.
  • Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills with a variety of internal and external organizations and levels.
  • Requires strong human resources skills, ability to listen and quickly address human resources issues, motivate staff to achieve high levels of professionalism to ensure business alignment of business objectives at all levels of the operation.
  • Strong business acumen is required.
  • A good understanding of the Canadian and global security landscape, R&D needs, process/product qualification, and technology/program/project management, which incorporates management objectives related to people, processes, customers, and financial performance, is required.
