Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager of Development Zoning and Committee of Adjustment, the Senior Planner will contribute to a collaborative team focused on the development of the Comprehensive Zoning By-law. This role involves analyzing and interpreting various data sets, offering strategic recommendations regarding by-law standards, and preparing essential documentation and reports throughout the project lifecycle. The Senior Planner will also engage in public meetings, information briefs, and forums to advocate for the City’s planning objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage assignments related to the comprehensive zoning by-law initiative, providing analytical recommendations through detailed reports and presentations to Committees and Council.
  • Gather and compile data, preparing reports and documentation pertinent to the project while actively participating in meetings and coordinating project efforts.
  • Engage in special projects associated with policy planning and zoning by-law amendments.
  • Solicit feedback from internal departments and external agencies, conducting site inspections as necessary.
  • Facilitate the resolution of outstanding issues and inquiries from stakeholders, preparing reports and planning documents as required.
  • Draft general correspondence and engage with the public effectively.
  • Serve as a primary resource and representative for various departmental and corporate initiatives.
  • Mentor junior planning staff and assist in training new employees.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed on emerging trends and best practices in urban planning.
  • Process development applications as needed and undertake additional projects and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Urban Planning or a related field.
  • Full membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (RPP) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive planning experience in a relevant environment.

  • Thorough understanding of the Ontario Planning Act and related legislation.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional customer service skills for public inquiries and interactions with the development industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in public presentations.
  • Ability to work independently with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of planning legislation, policies, and principles at the municipal level.
  • Political awareness across various levels of government.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities with a focus on time management and prioritization.
  • Conflict resolution, negotiation, and facilitation skills.
  • Experience in evaluating a diverse range of development applications.
  • Proficient in interpreting planning documents and preparing relevant reports.
  • Experience defending planning opinions in formal settings.
  • Commitment to personal and professional growth, including leadership opportunities.
  • Willingness to participate in a culture of learning and mentoring.
  • Availability for meetings outside of regular business hours may be necessary.
  • Exemplification of the City's core values of service, collaboration, care, and courage.
  • Must be able to travel to various work sites as required.
