We are looking for an Environmental Compliance Specialist (ECS) for our northeast Alberta region. In this capacity, you will offer informed guidance to regulated entities and the public regarding their responsibilities to protect Alberta's environment and public health. You will engage in consultations, provide advice and direction, and enforce legislation as necessary. You will respond to environmental incidents, evaluate compliance with relevant legislation, gather evidence to ascertain if a violation has occurred, and conduct inspections to ensure regulatory adherence.

As an ECS, you will be part of the Compliance Team, reporting to the Compliance Assurance Lead. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing the principles of Education, Prevention, and Enforcement as outlined in the Government of Alberta's compliance assurance management framework to ensure legislative adherence.
  • Conducting both proactive and reactive inspections to evaluate regulatory compliance across various sectors, including drinking water, contaminated sites, industrial, agricultural, and municipal.
  • Addressing a diverse range of environmental challenges.

You may also be called upon to serve as an Emergency Regional Responder, participating in an on-call rotation to receive, prioritize, and respond to environmental emergencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • A two-year technical diploma in a relevant field, preferably in Environmental Science, Agricultural Studies, Environmental Enforcement, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of six years of direct experience in compliance, regulatory, and/or enforcement roles.
  • Equivalencies will be considered based on experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Assets:

  • Experience with the application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, and the Public Lands Act.
  • Experience working within regulated sectors such as drinking water, contaminated sites, industrial, agricultural, and municipal.
  • Experience in regulatory inspection and/or investigation processes and techniques.
  • Transferable skills, experience, education, and alignment with Government of Alberta values may be considered.
