Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter

Aviva Canada Inc. presents a remarkable opportunity for a Property and Casualty Commercial Lines Underwriter within our Medium Enterprise Insurance division. This role is integral to our Commercial Insurance Branches.
As a member of the Medium Enterprise team, you will manage a diverse portfolio of core commercial insurance accounts that necessitate a solid underwriting expertise and a commitment to exceptional customer service. Your responsibilities will encompass all facets of underwriting for small to mid-sized commercial property and casualty accounts, with premiums reaching up to $25,000. This position allows you to leverage your commercial underwriting acumen in a collaborative team setting. Experience in underwriting new business and managing a varied renewal portfolio is highly valued. We seek insightful and business-oriented underwriters who can foster strong relationships through the effective management of an assigned broker portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and underwrite intricate accounts utilizing advanced critical thinking and risk evaluation, while aligning with customer needs to achieve favorable revenue and profitability outcomes.
- Cultivate and sustain relationships both internally and externally to provide outstanding broker and customer service.
- Serve as a point of escalation for junior underwriters and authorize risks within your designated authority limits.
- Ensure the quality and profitability of the portfolio, referring any risks outside your authority to a Specialist.
- Offer insights based on market research and analysis; develop business cases for pricing, coverage, and product enhancements.
- Contribute to the timely introduction and communication of pricing, coverage, and product modifications, including the creation of underwriter bulletins and the development of underwriting guidelines and manuals.
- Identify and address areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies, implementing remediation strategies as necessary.
- Enhance your knowledge of all Information Systems/Programs utilized within Commercial Insurance.
- Participate in Quality Reviews and audits as required.
- Support the maintenance of a compliant underwriting environment concerning filed rates and regulations.
- Engage in regulatory filings for rate adjustments and contribute to filings for forms and underwriting.
- Stay informed about industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in commercial insurance underwriting.
- Post-secondary education in Business or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- CIP/FCIP designation preferred.
- Strong understanding of underwriting, pricing, and products in key sectors such as Wholesaling, Manufacturing, and Contractors.
- Familiarity with other functional areas, including Claims, Risk Management, and Accounting.
- Comprehensive understanding of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, and technical manuals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, RTM, Commercial systems, and other relevant software.
- Ability to engage professionally to build long-term relationships with brokers and clients.
- Capacity to collaborate with internal partners to enhance broker and customer experiences.
- Self-motivated with a proactive approach to identifying business opportunities with brokers and clients.
- Strong listening skills to effectively meet broker and customer needs.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
