Aviva is seeking a highly skilled Senior Property Underwriter to join our team. As a key member of our Commercial Lines team, you will be responsible for performing quality audits and reviews, supporting underwriter referrals, and acting as an underwriting resource.
Key Responsibilities- Underwriting Expertise: Act as an underwriting resource on complex risks outside of the authority level of front-line underwriters and authorize risks within established authority levels.
- Quality Reviews: Complete Underwriting Quality Reviews on commercial and property underwriters, including those with our MGA partner.
- Branch Oversight: Oversee the Underwriting Quality Reviews for the branch, including action items and follow-ups.
- Training and Development: Participate in training as required, including subject research, preparation of material, and delivery of training.
- Staff Development: Participate in the training and development of underwriting staff members, providing technical expertise and advice on products, systems, and processes.
- Risk Consultation: Consult with our Central Technical Unit regarding unique or unusual risks to minimize adverse risk selection and maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio.
- Large Loss Review: Oversee the Large Loss review process.
- Company Knowledge: Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of company operations and procedures, including demographic, economic, and social characteristics.
- Product Knowledge: Participate in the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage, and/or product changes in a timely manner.
- Loss Analysis: Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies.
- System Knowledge: Develop and maintain working knowledge of all Information Systems/Programs within.
- Audit Participation: Participate in other audits as required.
- Guideline Development: Participate in the development of Underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
- Industry Knowledge: Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
- Corporate Objectives: Contribute to corporate objectives and assist in the presentation of proposals as required.
- Experience: At least 7+ years of experience in Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriting, including complex risks.
- Education: Post-secondary education (Business or related discipline) or equivalent practical experience.
- Certifications: CIP/FCIP preferred.
- Audit Knowledge: Knowledge of audit processes and methodology.
- Product Knowledge: Strong knowledge of underwriting, pricing, and product in key segments, i.e. Wholesaling, Manufacturing, and/or Contractors.
- Company Knowledge: Working knowledge of company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statutory constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
- Functional Knowledge: Working knowledge of other functional areas, i.e. Claims, Risk Management, Accounting, etc.
- Technical Skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), RTM, commercial lines computer systems, and other related systems.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact in a professional manner to develop long-term relationships with internal stakeholders and front-line underwriters.
- Self-Motivation: Ability to be self-motivated and proactively identify technical opportunities for employee development.
