Job Overview

This role is situated within the DC Department of Human Resources, focusing on the provision of emergency medical and firefighting services. The department is dedicated to safeguarding lives and property through comprehensive fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical response.

Firefighter Paramedics will operate in a dynamic and innovative environment, responding to a variety of emergency situations, including but not limited to structural fires and medical emergencies. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain extensive experience while fulfilling the core mission of the department. Firefighter Paramedics will be stationed at various firehouses and will respond promptly to emergency calls using specialized units.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will deliver emergency medical assistance in line with established protocols, which may involve advanced life support techniques such as intubation, intravenous therapy, and the use of defibrillators. Responsibilities include:

  • Driving emergency medical units to incident locations efficiently and safely.
  • Providing continuous patient care during transport to medical facilities.
  • Documenting all medical interventions and observations accurately for record-keeping.
  • Managing patients in various emotional states, including those under the influence of substances.

In addition to medical duties, the incumbent will serve as a firefighter, responding to various emergencies with minimal delay. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing emergency scenes and communicating critical information to command staff.
  • Conducting fire inspections and determining safe evacuation routes.
  • Executing firefighting techniques, including ventilation and hose deployment.
  • Operating complex firefighting apparatus and rescue equipment.

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must successfully complete the department's training program and meet all probationary standards. Essential qualifications include:

  • Valid Birth Certificate or Naturalization Documentation.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • State Issued Driver's License.
  • National Registry Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification.

Licenses and Certifications

Candidates must possess and maintain the following certifications:

  • Firefighter I and II certifications.
  • Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or an approved equivalent.
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (NREMT-P).

Working Environment

Incumbents will operate emergency vehicles in various weather conditions and may encounter hazardous environments. Adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory. The role involves working in a team-oriented, dormitory-style setting for extended shifts.

Additional Information

Candidates must maintain physical fitness and the ability to pass required testing. This position is subject to routine background checks and compliance with safety regulations.
