Position Summary
The DC Department of Human Resources is seeking dedicated individuals to serve as Firefighter Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). This role is crucial in enhancing the safety and well-being of the community by delivering top-notch Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The department prides itself on a diverse and skilled workforce committed to excellence in emergency management and patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Firefighter EMTs are stationed at various firehouses and are tasked with responding to a wide range of emergency situations promptly. Responsibilities include:
- Assessing fire conditions and communicating hazards to the command team upon arrival at emergency scenes.
- Evaluating structures for fire risks and determining safe evacuation routes for affected individuals.
- Executing rescues from dangerous situations and providing immediate medical assistance to those in need.
- Operating firefighting equipment, including hoses, ladders, and extinguishers, to control and extinguish fires.
- Utilizing advanced medical equipment to assess and treat patients, including performing CPR and managing trauma cases.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
- Must be at least 19 years old by the application deadline.
- Must possess a valid driver's license; provisional licenses are not acceptable.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Must successfully complete a physical ability test and a drug screening.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check to assess suitability for the role.
Certifications Required
The following certifications must be obtained and maintained:
- Firefighter I and II
- Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Valid DC Health EMT card
- National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT-B)
Work Environment
Firefighter EMTs operate in various conditions, often in high-stress environments requiring quick decision-making and teamwork. The role involves exposure to diverse weather conditions and potential hazards, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment.
