Position Overview

The role of the Mental Health Nurse involves working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, reporting directly to the Director of Health Services. This position is essential for delivering comprehensive case management to students facing intricate mental health challenges and disorders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health support and crisis intervention utilizing the nursing process.
  • Engage in case management by monitoring client responses to treatment and assessing risks of self-harm or harm to others.
  • Collaborate with Health and Counselling staff and external community organizations to support students effectively.
  • Participate in campus-wide mental health and addiction education initiatives and contribute to policy development.

Qualifications Required

  • Possess specialized knowledge in crisis intervention, psychiatric diagnosis, and pharmacology.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to foster patient trust and ensure accurate medical documentation.
  • Exhibit flexibility and the ability to perform under pressure while making informed medical decisions.
  • Showcase strong time management skills and the capacity for resourcefulness and initiative.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding patient information.
  • Have experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning within a mental health context.
  • Ability to engage with clients in emotional distress or urgent situations in a supportive manner.
  • Experience working within a shared care model alongside an interdisciplinary team.
  • Understand the developmental challenges and mental health issues pertinent to the student demographic.

Educational Background

The ideal candidate will typically possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) with current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses, along with certification as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse (CPMHN(C)) or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in mental health and substance use settings, with at least two years focused on emerging adults.
  • Experience in case management, crisis counseling, and collaboration with community resources.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act and Health Care Consent Act.
