Position Overview:

The role of the Mental Health Nurse involves working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and reporting directly to the Director of Health Services. This position is essential for delivering comprehensive case management to students facing intricate mental health challenges and disorders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide mental health support, crisis intervention, and care utilizing the nursing process for students experiencing mental health issues.
  • Collaborate with Health and Counselling staff and external community organizations to facilitate effective case management.
  • Monitor client responses to treatment and assess risks of self-harm or harm to others.
  • Engage in the development and implementation of campus mental health and addiction education programs.
  • Contribute to policy formulation regarding mental health services.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Expertise in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and psychiatric symptomology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to ensure accurate medical documentation and patient engagement.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and make informed medical decisions promptly.
  • Experience in clinical case formulation and treatment planning within a mental health context.
  • Proficiency in developing therapeutic relationships with diverse student populations.

Educational Background:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) with current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses, along with certification as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse (CPMHN(C)) or its equivalent. A minimum of five years of experience in mental health and substance use settings is preferred, with at least two years of experience working with emerging adults.
